Re: XP won't install updates

Just an idea, but have you updated Microsoft Windows Downloader to its most recent version?

Not sure if it will help with your auto-update problem, but I to reimage my workstation in my office last week and I couldn't install Windows Live with the version 3-something I had on my system.  I had to update to 4.5.

Re: XP won't install updates

And If it were me the first thing I would try is uninstalling  "microsoft office home and student 2007" and try updating.

And if you have Firefox as your default browser, are you switching over to IE browser to run the updates ?

Re: help my windows xp wont install updates and ive recently bou

OK couple of questions - is this a older pc?  Did you upgrade your windows recently (like from xp to vista)?  Is this by any chance a non authorized copy of windows (like did the neighbor kid build you a pc and use a  bootlegged copy of windows)?

its a few yrs old but its still in good working condition it is sp2 and always has been....as far as i know it isnt an unauthorised copy....though if you think it could help i could go to the windows site and update for SP2 to SP3 if you think that might help

SP3 shouldn't make a difference. I installed Office with only SP2 installed. If the copy of Office is legit it will have a colorful CD design. It's a hologram. I can't remember what color it is though. I found this link which sounds similar.

Sounds like a lot of hassle to me. You could just go with open office. It's free and can now be set to open some office files. As long as you don't have to send it to other Office users it will work every bit as well. I have both and usually use Open Office instead.
