So my son kicked his xbox last nite in the dark, and when he went to play his game it was freezing. He took out the disc and saw 2 round scratches on it. I have a feeling the disc is ruined, but i've been hearing things that may give me hope, like some type of cleaner or taking it to gamestop or somewhere like that. Anyone have any ideas or experience with this?

Re: Xbox - Scratches on a disc

Go to any gamestop, and ask for a cd doctor, they will know what you are talking about and you can pick one ip for about 15-35$

The only stupid question is the one that remains unasked

Here's another remedy:  Cigarette ashes mixed with a small bit of mayonnaise.  I sh't you not.  Works on light furniture scratches, too.

auto wax. you can buy special CD/DVD commercial polishes and scratch removers, of course, but there are household items that will give the same end results. such as auto wax.  liquid auto wax is just as effective. if scratches are too deep, there isn’t much to be done. scratches on the upper label surface are impossible to repair. but on the shiny playing side of the disc, a quick polish with any liquid auto wax will often fix minor scratches. apply a few drops of the liquid wax to the damaged area, then wait for it to dry to a haze. buff away the haze with a soft dry cloth or cotton ball. don’t buff in a circular motion around the CD - do it across the disc.

Re: Xbox - Scratches on a disc

I've used toothpaste on my kid's PS2 disks with good results.

Re: Xbox - Scratches on a disc

Don't glop it on there, but use about the same amount you put on your toothbrush.  I used Colgate on a dry cloth and rubbed in firm circles over the visible suspect scratches.  He had two where the scratches were real deep and on those I used automotive rubbing compound - I got one disk to work but the other didn't.

I ragged his ass for not taking care of his disks and had him put them back in their cases.  Took him an hour he has so many.  He said he'd keep them in their cases from then on.  Go into his room right now and his game disks are out of their cases in messy piles.  haha!

I forgot to ask, how do you get the toothpaste off? Do you wipe it off with damp cloth or what?

Re: Xbox - Scratches on a disc

I rinsed it off in the sink and dried it on my wife's guest towels.

Re: Xbox - Scratches on a disc

Here's some suggestions from Wiki for fixing a scratched disk.

 http://www.wikihow.com/Fix-a-Scratched-CD.

A friend swears by the toothpaste method listed in there, but I've personally never tried it.
