I recently switched webhosts and I need help on installing WordPress on a Plesk (http://www.parallels.com/products/plesk) server. It can't be automatically installed. I get a 500 Internal Server Error, though I've CHMOD'ed all the files correctly. I emailed my hosts and the only response I got back was that it was an "install error" and to try dragging and dropping the program via an FTP client. I did, with the demo of Fetch and I still get the error. Is this because Fetch is in demo mode or is it the Plesk server? I'd really like for someone to install WordPress for me, since I've never done it before and don't know what settings I'd need.

You'll get something in return, if you want!

I have unlimited space/bandwidth, so I can set you up an FTP name and you can have an ad-free little site, as long as you don't violate anyone's copyrights or upload illegal files. Or an email address. Or both. Or I can link to you in my 'credits' widget.

I can provide screenshots of the errors I'm getting and the Plesk's cpanel for the permissions on my files, if need be.

Re: WordPress Installation Help? (Plesk Server)

where do you get the error?
Is it at the first step of the install screen? (www.website.com/wp-admin/install.php)
or does it come after when its trying to connect to your MYSQL database?
Do you know what version of Plesk? is it 8.6.0?

Error 500 is a config error. Make sure that your server is PHP ready.
If you have the option to use a linux server, use that. They are very PHP friendly.
I've setup several WordPress sites on linux and they work everytime.

It's not because Fetch is in demo-mode.

Remember that in order to work all the files must be there, the database has to be created, and the WordPress must be configured to connect to the database. Also, if you dragNdrop your files with Fetch, be sure you are also getting the updated .HTACCESS file, which is probably hidden by default so you may not be getting it copied over.

Although I've never worked on a Plesk setup, i've setup/fixed my share of Wordpress installs - so if you can't figger it out i may be able to help.

Re: WordPress Installation Help? (Plesk Server)

I have the .htaccess and I set it to 777 which I assume is a "writable" CHMOD/permission. Do I have to upload it as text? I used to have to upload certain files as text when I installed Greymatter back in the day. Also, do I need to make a static folder? When installing MovableType, the main part of the program has to be in a cgi-bin folder and the images and CSS in a mt-static folder. Do I need a static folder for Wordpress?

777 ?! No, you should crank that back to 644 - 777 is world-writable - NOT good.

you should upload all the files as binary - and if you edit any of the files on your Mac, be sure to save them as Unicode.

All the files should go in the "root" of where the site will live - so this is usually in your \PUBLIC_HTML folder.
