I'm having a bit of a rough time fixing my friend's mom's Dell, and after exhausting pretty much every Google link, I now turn to you all for help.

The computer shut down unexpectedly and began rebooting to the Unmountable Boot Volume error.  To remedy this, I used a copy of Windows that came with a different Dell (SP1) because I heard that Dell's master boot record was proprietary.  I ran a chkdsk /r, and there were several errors fixed.  That appeared to fix the Boot Volume error, but when Windows started to load again it stopped short, giving me the "Stop c000135/winsrv" error.  The only viable option for me, based on Microsoft's KB article, was to uninstall SP2, and then uninstall TVMedia spyware (which I'm not certain the computer has) and then reinstall SP2 after downloading the patch for that error.  When I went to uninstall SP2 through Recovery Console, the Uninstall directory for SP2 is missing.  I have a sneaking suspicion that I caused this by using something other than the official Dell recovery disc to run chkdsk /r.  Also, I think the computer came with SP2 loaded, so is it possible there is no uninstall directory?  I'm just stuck.  One advantage I have is that I can easily plug the broken computer's hard drive into my computer, which allows me to work with it without going through Recovery Console.

 1) Is there a way to fix the winsrv error without removing SP2, or a way to uninstall SP2 without access to an uninstall directory?

2) If I have to reinstall Windows, is there a way that I can import the current registry, or a recent one, to preserve my program installations?

Thank you in advance, and let me know if any more information is needed.

Best,
