It has been determined that I am suffering from an acute case of Dashboard Envy. But the prognosis is looking good! Husband-of-mine is the Wiki-Image of ~~geek~~ Uber.Geek and has every cool gadget/widget possible on his Dashboard. Now if you are scratching your head trying to figure that one out well then.... I'm sorry. Buy a MAC. One of the best and kicka$$ features is the Dashboard and customization of it. This evening I managed to hook myself up with a Hula Girl. That's right! No dashboard is complete without a dancing hula girl. Got one!

And also added a lava lamp. Husband has the Plasma Tube. Also very cool. Then went back for more at the Apple site and perused their Top 50 Widgets. Found the International section and downloaded the Bloggel. Need to fully check that one out!

Follow these quick steps to keep your favorite Dashboard widgets open:

hit the F12 key to reveal your dashboard.
then, from the widget drawer at the bottom of the dashboard, drag the widget you want (example: hula girl) onto the desktop, and before you release it, hit the F12 key again. you will see hula girl be fully functional on the desktop just as she is on the dashboard.
when you’re done with it, simply hit the F12 key twice and it will go away.

Sorry, I haven't become geek enough yet to shell out the bucks for a mac, only an ipod. Beleive me, I do have something to add to this. I have been using Vista and it has something similar, a sidebar, I haven't played too much with it, may be able to move it around, but you can add gadgets to it, and download more, etc.

Okay, finally was able to keep my widgets on my desktop but I had to put a command in the terminal first before I could follow your directions. For me, I has to:

1. Go to Spotlight

2. Search for Terminal

3. Open Terminal

4. Put in defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES and press enter.

5. Then log out of your account.

6. Log back in and then follow Tuna's directions.

7. To disable, use this command: defaults write com.apple.dash...

And this command is only for Leopard.

Tuna, I can totally relate to you and your husbands uber-geekness. My dashboard has about a ton of countdowns on it, to various important events, wheather forecasts, converters and about 10-15 sticky notes. I know, total mess. My personal favourite right now is the "juice bar" widget. You get a new recipe almost every day to a delicious and heathy smootie. I highly recommend it!!!

I'll also have to check out the lava lamp. Sounds...groovy!!!

I have not yet reached Zen-Mac'ness yet.. all i have is the standard widgets, minus the totally lame ones that i've removed..

omg - jump on the mac widgie band wagon w/me! there are tons of fun widgies out there: geeky, factoid, stats, nosey, and you name it. there are widgies for virtually everything!

I got the Hula girl yesterday, a screenshot widget, pinball widget...some more that I can't remember. I don't know how to customize them though.

in the bottom right of the hula girl you will see a lower case i in italics. click it. then customize it. the hula girl can turn into hula guy, hula jesus, and hula bart! with a background sunset, beach, sky & clouds, or volcano.

so go to any of your new widgies and hover your mouse in the bottom right area to get the i to show up. then click it to see what the widget options are.

Dashboard/Widgets

So I have a few widgets that I really like but I have no idea to keep them up while I am working on my computer. When I have widgets up, they usually block whatever I am working on, therefore, I can only have a quick peek before I go back to what I am doing. Is there a way to keep your widgets up while you're doing something else?

yes, follow these easy steps:

hit the F12 key to reveal your dashboard.

okay, run through your steps again. be sure to drag the widget of choice from the bottom of the dashboard (just below the dock). once you drag it to your desktop, hit F12 to release it. this works for me continually, i was just showing my husband as i stepped through it again. this time i used the calculator.

How long have you had your Mac? I was reading on another site that you cannot do this anymore. I tried it multiple times and it still did not work.

this particular MAC i've had for four months. i also run FF3 on it. didn't care much for safari. i am at a loss as to why the F12 trick will not work for you. again, it works great. i tried it on one of the new iMacs we have here also, and on a mini.
