Re: whats IP?

i understand what an ip is, but i have just tracked 4 hits that have the identical ip. 3 of them are the same profile and 1 is a djfferent profile. does this mean that one person logged in at that address, and another person logged in on the same computer, thus bringing up the same ip?  thanks ...juliekTongue out

Re: whats IP?

A IP is your computers address.  IP stands for "Internet Protocol".  Now with that said there are two types of IP addresses.  Dynamic IP addresses where the IP address changes or Static IP where the IP address stays the same.

Most internet providers have gone to Dynamic IP addresses simply because they can have more clients.  Let me point you here to this article that better explains a IP address.  Scroll 1/2 way down and you can read the difference between the two types of IP's.

But yes if you move your IP address would change.  Now not all IP addresses will show where you are.  Example if you use AOL it will show you in Herndon Virginia or Reston Virginia regardless if you live in CA or FL because they are a dynamic IP.

Re: whats IP?

Am I right in saying that users with a cable modem tend to have the same (static) IP all the time? Cause the modem is never really turned off? I think I've had the same IP for years now.

I'm not sure how DSL works...

But I understand dial up will always be dynamic, right?
