Hi,

I was looking through the My Documents section of my computer and i found this had been added on August 15, 2008.  The name of the file is in blue and this is the information on it:

Default.rdp

Remote Desktop Connection

0kb

When i click properties i get the location, and it says the size on the disc is 4kb

Is someone hacking my computer?  Thank you

Re: What is Default.rdp

Default.rdp is a file that is created upon using the, "Remote Desktop Connection" application in Windows. You or somebody using your computer connected to a RDP using remote desktop connection.

Default.rdp is a safe file that stores default information. If you open up "Remote Desktop Connection", press "Options >>" and the user name field already has a value stored in it. That would be from your "Default.rdp" file filling it in for you by...default.

I hope this helped,

Re: What is Default.rdp

Thank you all for your help.  Seems to be a false alarm,  but since the date in question was a date that I was out of town I was worried.  I looked and "allow remote users" was not checked.  After looking I did not find where there had been any.  I have not done the net stat or the notebook trick suggested, but will as soon as I am not so brain dead.  Thanks again!

Re: What is Default.rdp

Use the NETSTAT command to find out -

"If you are worried about possible remote connections, open up a dos window (Start->Run, then type CMD), and type NETSTAT -A

This will list all of the connections your computer is making. If you see something odd, you can do a NETSTAT -O to find out what process is using that connection, then do a CTRL-ALT-DEL to open up the task manager and view the process. "

Re: What is Default.rdp

Hello.

If you go with the netstat -a command you are looking for port 3389 to be open. That is the default port for RDP.

I would suggest you skip all that and just turn it off. For XP Pro:

Right click my computer->properties->remote->is the button checked for allow users to connect remotely to this computer? Uncheck that and hit apply->now click the button that says "select remote users" and see who was added, it should just be your username. If there is another name then there is your culprit. Most likely it was checked during a support session?

You can also do a Start->Run->type in - firewall.cpl->is the firewall on? Turn it on->select exceptions->uncheck remote desktop.

Re: What is Default.rdp

Actually, you could have a little fun with this.

Right click the default.rdp file and open with a notepad. You should see something like this.

screen mode id:i:1
desktopwidth:i:800
desktopheight:i:600
session bpp:i:16
auto connect:i:1
full address:s:192.168.1.12
compression:i:1
keyboardhook:i:2
audiomode:i:2
redirectdrives:i:0
redirectprinters:i:0
redirectcomports:i:0
redirectsmartcards:i:0
displayconnectionbar:i:1
username:s:Administrator
domain:s:AKA
alternate shell:s:
shell working directory:s:
disable wallpaper:i:1
disable full window drag:i:1
disable menu anims:i:1
disable themes:i:1
bitmapcachepersistenable:i:1

You can check the connecting username in the file and you can check the values that have been set through this link here:

Re: What is Default.rdp

Even if nobody has yet invited themselves into your computer, if you dont have the need for someone remotely controlling it you can disable it.
In your System Properties you should find a "remote" tab, on there, UNcheck the box that says "allow remote connections".. This is for Windows XP Pro, and is by memory, so the wording may not be exact.

Re: What is Default.rdp

For Vista Users:

Control Panel> System and Maintenance> System> In the task bar on the left side, click Remote Settings. Uncheck the box that says Allow Remote Access.

"Who is this irresistible creature who has an insatiable love for the dead? Living Dead Girl"
