I just got a new hp laptop and it has windows Vista. For some reason it wont connect to the internet on our network. It just tells me it couldn't connect, then when I try to repair it, it tells me that it can't be repaired then thats it. It will connect to some other random network that it picks up. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Vista Vista Vista!

I'd bet that if it will connect to someone elses network, but not your own; you have encryption/authentication configured wrong. from a computer (prefably XP because I have next to no experience with Vista.... )using the same network that will connect do this

start -> run -> type "cmd" -> type "ipconfig /all"

take any ip address (123.45.67.89) that shows up as "dafault gateway" and type it into a web browsers address bar and press enter. One of these should take you to your routers configuration page. Now you need to navigate your way thru your routers settings, look for stuff pertaining to wireless settings -> encryption and authentication

take down the settings from here, and then go to your new laptop and try figuring out where to put all the settings. I have no experience with either Vistas or HPs Wireless configureation tools. So you're kinda on your own. But just make sure you use the same authentication method, the same type of encryption (WEP, TKIP, AES), and the same key on both the router and on your laptop.
