Anyone have any recs??? My computer guy at work recommended AVG... Said the free version was enough... But I read that there is a possible conflict with Firefox and Adblock.... Any thoughts???
Virus Protectin Recommendations???
I have used AVG and Firefox for several years, and have had no conflict.
I was also using CounterSpy for antispyware, but it has gotten very slow over the past several months.
I just upgraded to the paid version of AVG Anti-Virus 8.0, because it includes antispyware. Very happy with it so far.
There are 2 differences between AVG Anti-virus and AVG Internet Security. Both are version 8.0, but Internet Security includes firewall and anti-spam. I did not need either of those.
Over the weekend I wrote a pretty thorough blog post about the new AVG, if you're interested.

I swear by Avast. It's free to end users with an online registration. It updates its filters frequently. The only 'gotcha' I've seen is that you have to renew the (free) registration every 14 months. I don't seem to get many triggers if I stay away from the no-no places but every once in a while a download from a supposedly 'upright' site will trigger it. When I was active on Usenet it was going off twice a day!
Avast has filters for email and Outlook as well as IM's & P2P, etc. I've recommended it to several people and they have been uniformly grateful for the tip.
I was using both Spybot and AdAware along with AVG 7.5 ( I think) the paid edition that I got a free license for. I thought everything was great. No problems every showed up. Well......I just updated to AVG 8.0 paid edition. After a 3 hour scan of my computer it came up with a disgusting list of spyware and one trojan. I had run Spybot the day before. It took quite sometime for AVG to dispatch of all those spywares. The next day during another scan it popped about 12 more spywares. So what gives. Well the wife had been using IE for her online classes a bunch over the last few weeks. That's what gives.
So IE = spyware. Luckily all her classes are done now and we can resume with Firefox only. I'm still a little angry that both Spybot and AdAware let me down. I guess you can never have too much protection.
"I'm just like you only shorter."
After my recent computer virus/trojan/worm issues...
I love love love avast. Ive used AVG in the past and I had no problems or complaints with it.
SpyBot S&D and adaware are absolute 'MUSTS'
Hijack This is only useful after you've been infected- its not an actual protector.
Since you are a member of PT, i do not suggest nod32 as the PT code and nod32 are not friends.
Ive never had any issues with my PT code and NOD32. I will say that if I have my adblock off and I visit a myspace with PT code it will pop up as a possible trojan but that was with the old code (the cookie stealing one). My reasoning with NOD32 (and I believe hubby recommends that one too) is that I use to have Norton. Well I discovered that something was wrong with my pc a while back (last year) and after running Norton 3x is said it was fine. A number of IT friends and some higher ups here all said try NOD32 so I did. Woo la NOD32 pulled of 9 trojans (real trojans) from my pc.
keyloggers - well I have them on my kids pc's. When I put NOD32 on the pc's it light up like a Christmas tree telling me of my keyloggers (which was in stealth mode). That right there also was a huge selling point. Oh unlike some antivirus programs NOD32 updates every single day and sometimes more than once. It also doesn't slow you down and take up little ram.
I agree with AE that SpyBot S&D and adaware are a must (both free)

I used both AVG and Firefox, and I have never once experienced a conflict between the 2. I've had problems with SpyBot S&D and one particular Firefox add-on, but that was easily fixed by changing some of the add-on's settings. AVG Free is excellent, takes up a lot less system resources than any other anti-virus program I've used, and, and has been effective in not only eliminating virii I've picked up, but also in preventing new ones.

"You must be", said the cat, "Or you wouldn't have come here"
