You girls are good. I am going to have to GO to the theater for this one, and that is rare.
Twilight (movie)
D G - i love the input you shared from the tween readers. this is a great piece of feedback to gauge my decision, besides running it thru husband of mine.
animestrinity -the new trailer gave me chills. i'm more excited than ever! your take on the sensitivity of "sex" and what/how it is worded is good to know also. thanks for the details.
lady.c - you are correct that relationship issues between bf/gf are over her head at this age. she hears the drama with her bff's sister who just got dumped by her boyfriend of 3.5 years.......and came out of the closet that same week. yes, made for tv drama happening right here.
so, i'm going to purchase the first book today and since we have a 6 hour flight to our new home next week, i think i'll do the "read together" program.
thanks ladies. i appreciate the value/knowledge you've all shared. now, i want to see this movie opening day. i did see some sex scenes, well, maybe just intimacy in the trailer. i may let her see it also. not sure yet.

I'm most of the way through "New Moon". The story is fun, but as often as not, I want to punch Bella for being stupid and whiney.
"I flipped my channel back to CNN and I lit another cigarette"
New Moon was actually my fave, minus her being a COMPLETE IDIOT (I'm sorry, but what, 10 chapters of her not putting 2 and 2 together with Jakey boy... moron!)... but she was an idiot through the last three books. But evidently I'm one of the few who liked New Moon... most people didn't... I got boyfriend hooked on them, he picked up twilight, I emailed him the PDF of others.
Eclipse and Breaking Dawn are a bit more humorous which is entertaining... Breaking Dawn seemed a bit long for me... I hated how she switched the Narrator to Jacob in the middle... (then back to bella, don't worry)... it just kinda confused me, took a few chapters before I got used to it... then again, I read all four books one right after the other hardly eating or sleeping so maybe if I had breaks it would have been easier...
Oh, and for those who don't know, Midnight Sun is the 5th book... it's Twilight, but from Edwards POV.... the only issue is that the first half was leaked onto the internet and it upset the author so she seems to refuse to publish or finish it. Which makes me sad because I read it (you can find it on Stephenie Meyer's website now) and it gives a lot of insight to him and just how trapped he is in the point and time where he was changed. It's cute... and far more entertaining than Twilight was because it has a LOT more humor.. and more vampire shtuff...
I can't wait for November 21st...
I was just telling violet... How many sparkly vampires we might have for halloween if the movie came out earlier THIS month instead... I'm sure there will be plenty as is...

in your opinions anime and lady.c, is this series too mature for mini me to read? she's eleven.
<º))))><.·´¯`·.¸
No sex (so far, still reading book 2, though), but relationship issues, probably a year or 2 over her head would be my guess. I don't think there's anything in there you don't want her learning yet, I just don't think she'll really enjoy it yet.
"I flipped my channel back to CNN and I lit another cigarette"
ah, okay then. thanks lady.c. mini has a tendency to pick up a book husband of mine or i may be reading and just skim through it to see what we're reading. i'll just keep it in the night stand.

You could do what a friend of mine did -- she read it WITH her daughter. Buy two copies of the paperback. You'll read faster and can have her stop if you feel uncomfortable. Or better yet, read it together out loud if you have the time for that.
I work with girls this age and every 12 yr old I know has read it. Eleven is probably fine too. It is a lovely series, and if she's not into it or it's over her head, you both will figure it out right away.
There is the whole falling in love thing that is very young adult novel and suitable for this age. And the nice vampires don't kill humans. As one 12 yr old explained it to me before I bought the books "the nice vampires are vegetarian vampires. they dont drink human blood...just you know deer and mountain lions." To which I responded, "since when are deer and mountain lions vegetables?" It really does not seem inappropriate, even though you might initially think that.
And seriously.. vampires are SO not my thing, but I devoured (oh ha ha ha) the books.
I think Twilight is fairly innocent... I don't think the REAL issues come until after (mainly Eclipse and Breaking Dawn)... and Twilight stands well on it's own... just don't tell her there are more books lol...
I think the ONLY semi non innocent part in Twilight, is when Bella is curious and basically asks Edward if vampires express love in the same way humans do (she words it awkwardly...) He basically says yes... but when she asks him about their relationship he tells her it'd be impossible basically because he'd probably end up killing her... Throughout the book kissing her terrifies him too, with her that close to his teeth... so the kisses also remain chaste per his rules...
it's not worded exactly like that, but that's the gist... the word sex doesn't even show up until the third book (unless you count the first book mentioning 'unisex raincoats')
So you can probably judge from that whether you want her to read it... you have to keep in mind that these aren't 12 year olds in the story, they're 17-18... so considering their age, I'd say the book is very PG borderline PG-13 with the idea that it's vampires and he desperately wants to kill her.
Edit: I've also updated the main post to add the fight scene Sneak Peek...

i'm going to have to start reading the series. is new moon beginning? middle? what should be the first book i read?
<º))))><.·´¯`·.¸
Twilight.
New Moon.
Eclipse.
Breaking Dawn.
I have all 4, almost done with the 2nd book. Like I said, fun story, but the main character gets on my nerves. If she were a real person, I'd probably spill my drink on her "accidentally on purpose", she just annoys me like that.
"I flipped my channel back to CNN and I lit another cigarette"
Mmmmme. me. me. i was just getting ready to launch a thread on it and thought i should search the forum first. glad i did! i've watched 3 different trailers. so excited!! i love it when good movies launch during the holiday season.
<º))))><.·´¯`·.¸
All my students are enthralled in this series so I will for sure be seeing the movie too. I'm on book 2 right now. I just hung the "Twilight" poster that promotes reading in my library. It features the stars of the movie and the kids LOVE it.
I just finished Stephenie Meyer's adult novel "Host" - it was great! It's suitable for YA though, so I'll be adding it to the library collection.
I thought THIS ARTICLE was interesting... apparently our very own Edward is musical
... just when I thought he couldn't be any hotter... lol

I am so glad you started this post. I was a bit embarrased to be so excited about a teen novel/movie. I love it. I actually pick up a teen book now and then for travel etc. because they are such quick and fun reads. I only read the first but I fully intend to read the rest.
ME!!! I love all 4 books in the series. The topic (vampires) and the target audience (young adult) did not appeal to me at first, but when I saw all of my students reading it I thought it was required reading for school... but they range in age from 12 - 18 and all go to diff. schools, so it was seriously because they were all engrossed by it. And rightly so. It's addictive .. I could not stop reading.
Stephenie Meyers is a great author and her own story of how this got written and published within 6 mo. is pretty amazing in itself. I am so waiting... impatiently.
I just bought the last three today, had to go to 3 different stores to find them all... the last two I got in hardback which annoys me since I HATE hardback novels...
I still need to finish the last 150 pages of Twilight itself... and the movie... I can't waittttttt... I even had dreams about Edward last night (then again I was reading RIGHT before I went to bed...)... and I'm not complaining

Hubby-to-be's daughter LOVES her books. She's been pushing me to read them, but I haven't... School textbooks are about all I read these days... This will be a great shortcut for me... Thanks for bringing it up, Anime!

Excellent. I believe we have spurred curiosity now. We really should work in PR.
