I know that IP addresses aren't always completely accurate, but I have a question.

I've tracked an IP for someone who is using Earthlink. The IP came up as located in Jacksonville, Florida (Earthlink's main office is in Atlanta), yet the person is supposed to be in northern Alabama, almost 9 hours away from Jacksonville.

Do any of you have knowledge of Earthlink & how accurate it is in trackers? Is it possible that it's just routed through Jacksonville, or is it likely that they are in the Jacksonville area? The IP didn't come up as a hotel or other public area. I know sometimes IPs come up from neighboring states, but this seems quite far from the supposed location.

Thanks!

Re: Tracker IP Question Concerning Earthlink

Thank you both for your reply! Smile   It makes sense that it's similar to AOL.

I'm pretty sure it's the right person - just a little bit off on the location.

Re: Tracker IP Question Concerning Earthlink

I don't know specifically anything about Earthlink, but I don't put too much faith in trackers/ip address location sites. Just today I had an IP address that showed up on one tracker as being in OH another said Ft.Lauderdale, FL, an IP location site KY, and another said WV. Another IP address came up as being in NY, NY even though their internet provider was listed as being our local owned cable company.

Also I know in the case of my city usually anyone local is mapped as being located at 1 of about 3 locations throughout our town map. I've never really checked into it but I would guess these locations either relate to the person's internet provider or the approximate area of town that they live. My point being that if the ip address your tracking was about the same location it very likely could be the correct person.

Re: Tracker IP Question Concerning Earthlink

I highly recommend using maxmind.com to check IPs. They are generally VERY accurate.

In the case of proxies, maxmind wont be any more accurate though.

Re: Tracker IP Question Concerning Earthlink

Earthlink IPs are very similar to AOL (they use the exact same technology) You can be in another state, or even across the country and still come up in one of (i think its 9 ) locations that earthlink routes all IPs through. So the bad news is, its terribly inaccurate for getting the locations of visitors.

Re: Tracker IP Question Concerning Earthlink

when using my ipod touch, my neighbors have earthlink that i link to, just to use an extra ip addy. i live in southern california, and the ip hit on my tracker with the earthlink isp shows up in northern california, which is handy for me. so, to answer your question, i believe it is quite possible it is the person you think it is. which tracker do you have? maybe compare some of the system stats, like browser, op system, and see if it matches your target as well.
