What should I do if I made a mistake on my return?

Can I amend my Tax return myself? I need the info for school and I forgot to write off my home office and union dues. My tax guy wants $75 bucks for doing it but I am guessing there is some way I can do it myself but I am not finding what I need help??? Also is there some book or something that locates things that can be a write off. I thought I could write off several things like my husbands uniform which cost $500.00 but my guy says no. Anyone know where I can find info on maxmizing write offs?
