So, I've been planning my first tattoo for a while. B/c of my schedule, I won't be able to get it done before June. Of course I want to spend my summer sunbathing and swimming, etc...

I've read very different opinions on the web on how long you're not allowed to jump into a pool, go to the gym, or expose the tattoo to sunlight (always with sunscreen,no question about that). Some said no sun/pool for at least 3 weeks, a tattooer told me today no pool for 10 days.

There's a huge difference between those opinions and I'm asking you guys since I understood most of you have more intel on this than I do Smiling

How long did you not work out? How long should I wait before I go swimming, etc. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

Re: Tattoo Care

You're probably right, I remember someone saying they wanted footwork.  I don't want the piercing, though.  I have a scar on my ankle, I want a daisy chain to cover it, and trellis work down onto the top of my foot.

Re: Tattoo Care

That sounds SO awesome. I'm still undecided on what exactly i want. It takes me a long time to decide on a tattoo. It absolutely MUST be unique. For instance, one of mine is a cow! LOL I love cows, and I've never met anyone else with one.

Re: Tattoo Care

I'm having a friend of mine draw it for me, and I'll bring it to someone.  She drew her own, she has her daughter's eyes on her lower back.  I'm giggling about your cow, the kid I used to babysit for got a little piggie tattooed on her leg, nobody's gonna have that.

LOL a cow is unique for sure.

If you have someone drawing it for you-I'm sure that's the best way to have a unique tattoo. Fortunately my tattoo artist also draws all his work by himself-he doesn't even have a catalog to choose from! Love it.

That sounds really hot, Lady C! Specially since it'll cover the scar-do you already have something specific in mind? Like your tattooist, when you want to have it, etc.

the standard tip rate for any tattoo or body piercing procedure is 20%. sometimes artists give a little extra by spending more time on a client's drawing, taking the time to provide specific aftercare instructions and answer questions. take note if an artist is showcasing some of their best work on you. if so, a higher percentage tip should then be applied.

now, to show appreciation, tattoo touch-ups should receive a minimum of $10 tip and jewelry insertions a minimum of $5 tip. rule of thumb, the more time and attention you receive the more monetary thanks should be shown.

lol i find that so amusing. No tattoo artists I know get tips unless they do something extraordinary. I have lots of holes punched in me, and i only ever tipped my girl once...cuz she pierced something extra at no charge. And im not a cheap person, i swear. Im a huge tipper when service is great. Ive just really never heard of this before...

Im not a rookie, but its just not the same etiquette around here. I asked a couple of friends who have lots of tats, and none of them tip either. So either everyone i know (and myself) are losers, or its not the same etiquette everywhere you go

pretty much! or, take the investigative approach: show up approximately 30-60 minutes early. browse the ink studio... nonchalantly keep your eyes peeled to what is going on and how the business transactions are exchanged/conducted.

IF I WERE YOU I WOULD WAIT ABOUT A MONTH IF YOU REALLY WANT TO TAKE A DIP, COAT IT WITH VASELINE. EXPOSING A TATTOO TO SUCH PROPERTIES BEFORE IT SETTLES IN YOUR MESODERM CAN RESULT TO FADING AND DISCOLORATION, EVEN THE PIGMENT HAVING A GREEN SMEARED EFFECT.

Heh, you'd be amazed even with what I said before, how much it can take a good roughing up. Without going into detail, the one I got last year on my chest pretty much got the scabbing rubbed off all in one night/early morning. All in all it's still held up.

i see a set of wings attached to a heart, and in the heart i see what looks like a key hole, which is black, but what i the red part?

Re: Tattoo Care

Well I meant moreso the details of how the scabbing got rubbed off Sticking out tongue

But yes, it's original.  I haven't done much in the form of art for a while but I can get a really good mental image and a really rough sketch of what I usually like.  I'll usually take that to the artist and tell them to run wild with it.

But you pretty much nailed it.  The red is just some color we've added to it to make it pop a bit more.  In actuality it's still a work in progress.  The area outside of the red is going to be a soft orange and red shading while the wings still need more detail and color to them.  And yep, it's a key hole Smiling

It goes shoulder to shoulder from each wing and the heart is in the middle on my sternum.

Re: Tattoo Care

Sweating is not really the issue with them telling you to go to the gym, it's mostly the stretching of the skin depending on the work out.  Ever had a decent cut somewhere on your body that isn't in a place of "low impact"?  It takes a bit longer to heal and that's what a tattoo more or less is, a wound.

Generally the things you would avoid to aggravate a wound of some sort is what you are looking to avoid.  If the tattooist is worth their salt they are going to use more ink then you need anyway so it's going to bleed out a bit.  It's just the usual thing, keep it clean, avoid irritation so on and so on.  Be good to it and it will be good to you.

Oh and of note, don't use any lotion that has alcohol in it.  Bad choice for two reasons.  It'll hurt like holy hell and it will dry it out.  Personally, I use cocoa butter but usually each tattooist will make their own suggestion.  Find one you are comfortable with.  And no scratching!

That was sorta wordy.

Haha thanks Ietio. I didn't know the gym thing, I thought it was b/c of the sweat, since sweat isn't a good thing on wounds either. I guess I'll just have to lay off all the fun things for awhile, till it heals..

Re: Tattoo Care

Well since I have umm well I lost count on my tats haha. Yes you can go to the gym what a tard. Although no swimming in chlorine cause it will dry out the tat and cause the ink to come out. He was also right about the sun as well another ink losing cause. Dont keep your tat covered for more than 8 hours with saran wrap and DO NOT use neosporin. Best thing to use is a&d ointment for the first 4 days then followed by lubriderm until healed. You will have a beautiful tat without lost ink promise;)

Re: Tattoo Care

I agree completely. A&D then keep it nice & moist with lubriderm lotion. Also, yes no pool for... awhile. And ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS put sunscreen on the tattoo. Forever.

Re: Tattoo Care

listen to your artist. he knows better than anyone the type and quality of ink he is using and to the extent it is penetrating your skin (ie: line thickness, fill surface area, size, etc.).

Re: Tattoo Care

I don't think there's really any set length of time, it all depends on you body and how quickly it heals.  Washing the tattoo with soap containing tea tree oil will help it heal faster, and I'm sure others know of some tricks as well.  Basically, if it's still scabby and feels kinda like puffy paint, I wouldn't go in the pool or ocean.  If it's healed over and the skin is smooth, you're probably ok.

Re: Tattoo Care

I agree with Lady C about the healing time. My friend is covered in tats, and he says to shower within the first 3 hours of getting a tat, but do not use soap...just let the water run over it. I didn't ask why.....

I was a nervous wreck about my tat when I got it. I was afraid of shirts touching it, sleeping on it, everything. But I seriously don't think that affects it at all. I never used a&d, although I know people who have. My artist told me to allow it to breathe as much as possible, and gunk like a&d kept it from breathing. I did use the non scented lubriderm, but only put it on when it felt a little dry. My artist told me if I kept it too moist, I would lose color....and it wouldn't heal.....

I used to put sunscreen on it when I would have it exposed to any type of uv rays...but now I guess I just forget....3 yrs almost and it still looks brand spanking new!

Once, my mom got these roses on her breast. She woke the next morning with her shirt covered in the ink. I have no idea what happened! She has no idea either. Now she has these horrible roses that have tiny amounts of color in them. Ugly!

Re: Tattoo Care

I have a friend who can't have red ink in her tattoos the SAME EXACT thing happens to her. Apparently for some reason her body rejects the red ink. Se once got some to stay in, but it got nastily infected.

That's actually fairly common with red ink.  Red ink seems to be the most finicky ink and can cause the largest amount of reactions from what I know.  It's all about the chemical make up of the red ink and what not.

Coincidently, red ink is also the hardest to remove by laser removal due to wave lengths of the color and the laser.

Re: Tattoo Care

Really?? thats good to know. Then I'll avoid having my tat done in red-you never know.

I also thought black ink was the hardest to remove by laser?

What is the color that gets most easily removed then? blue?

Oh no!! That scared the hell out of me!! Do you know how that could happen? And isn't there any chance your mom could get it re-done?

Re: Tattoo Care

I have no idea what happened to her.....

I figure the guy used bad ink, and probably was high or drunk when he did it......

I mean, the entire rose bled out all it's ink.

I really think staying power for a tattoo has a lot to do with the ink quality.

She wants to have it redone......but she has so many tats........
