To you ppl who have tats: Have you ever encountered someone who was rude/unfair to you because you have a tattoo? Have you ever not gotten a job because of a tat?

To you not-tattoed ppl: Do you have prejudices against tattoed people?

I come from a very conservative family. To them, tattoos are still ugly marks that people get in prison, and they therefore do not think highly of that. (So I guess they'll have to get used to mine-lol)

What do you guys think???Opinions, please!!

Re: Tats & Prejudices

I certainly hope I am not prejudiced toward people who have tattoos or piercings because I don't have any, but I am sure they are people who are. I think anyone should think long and hard about a tattoo or anything else that alters your body in a way that could have permanent consequences.

Many years ago, my husband and I went to visit his elderly Aunt in a small town hospital. They had only semi-private rooms and her roommate was a very elderly and senile woman, at least in her eighties. As we were talking with my husband's Aunt, the lady suddenly pulled back the curtain dividing the rooms and jumped up in the middle of her bed and started singing very loudly. She was completely naked and had several tattoos on her body. Let me tell you that tattoos that probably looked great on a young body, do not look great on an eighty year old body. It was an unforgettable sight!!

I used to think about that a lot, too. My piercer had a very, very interesting opinion about this "When you're 80 years old, your least problem will be a tattoo on your body". And I totally agree with that...

Re: Tats & Prejudices

That's certainly one way to look at it. At my age, I am beginning to become "aware", of how my actions will impact on other people in the future, such as caregivers and their opinions and attitudes. Old people are vulnerable enough without having to think about how their appearance is going to affect the care they receive. Just pray you don't end up with one of those "prejudiced" people taking care of you when you are old. So in that sense, that tattoo could really not be the "least of your problems" when you are old.

Now a days that would probably only hold true if you had a big swazi on your chest or whatever or maybe gang stuff.  By the time I'm 80 every one will be so used to tattoos. Besides any one who abuses an old person is just a coward who would look for any excuse to make them self feel more powerful or more intelligent. Some thing to compensate for how pathetic they really are.

Re: Tats & Prejudices

I completely agree with you, p.

I sure hope that when I'll be old my appearance won't matter to the people who take care of me-in a retirement home or to my family!

What I meant with the "least of my problems" is that by the time I'm that old that I have to rely on the help of others I'll have my boobs hanging to my knees, along with my butt and any other body part that is subject to gravity. Therefore I'd rather worry about all my wrinkles, back pains and memory loss than a little tattoo on my back..Which I'm not even able to see myself Smiling

Re: Tats & Prejudices

FairyGirl and P, I truly wish I shared your optimistic view of the future. I do hope you are right. I truly don't have anything against people having Tats, I just think that in the naivety of youth, people do things they regret later in life. People just need to think about what they are doing and be sure it's what they really want to do, and be prepared to live with the consequences, whatever they maybe. Maybe if I hadn't been subjected to the lovely site of that lady many years I ago, I would feel different. Happy tattooing to you all!!

Re: Tats & Prejudices

Hey Beachcamp, often tattoos are made in the naivety of youth, like you say. I agree with you on that one. Though I wouldn't really declare myself as "youth", I am prepared to live with the consequences e.g. not being able to get a job (Even if my ink is going to be well hidden), having to argue with boyfriend/lover/husband/whatever, but I believe that having someone to care for you when you're older doesn't depend on a tattoo. I worked with elderly people for quite some time and believe me..no one could have cared less if one of them had a tattoo or not. You see way worse things on a daily basis and someone there having a tattoo...well...was as important to us as the color of the sheets we had in the rooms..if you know what I mean!

My wife considers my tattoos icing on the cake. A short but well made cake. Hahaha. Man I'm a dork.

Re: Tats & Prejudices

Ha what you guys are saying all sounds great. Justus, I don't worry too much about the thing with my parents-it was just as an example that unfortunately, older people STILL believe ink is a bad thing.

I really hope that it's like you're saying, p to the izzle, that it fades with each generation.

Your strategy, 2na, is exactly mine. I choose places where it can easily be hidden OR be seen, depending on the clothing. I'm still too scared of getting fired or whatever for having a tattoo.

Re: Tats & Prejudices

I work in the action sports entertainment industry so you're actually part of the minority if you DON'T have a tattoo. I got my first tattoo about 12 years ago. My parents disliked them at first, but got used to each new one I got. I'm the youngest girl with 3 older brothers and I'm the only tatted one out of all of us, so it was hard for them to see their baby girl with ink. But ultimately, they realized it was my body and I was going to do what I wanted with it. Your family will most likely come to terms with the fact that tattoos are far from the status they used to be as prison ink, and get used to yours as well.

p.s. my daughter goes to catholic school and her 4th grade teacher has a tattoo on her ankle...if that says anything about ink these days. ;)

Re: Tats & Prejudices

lets face it. we are now a society that is judgmental. tried without jury. all of my ink work are placed strategically. i decide who sees them and when depending on the occasion and how i dress. i'm a parent, mom, grandma, wife, and a huge volunteer in the community of which i am domiciled. so, i do not usually allow the opportunity for anyone to pass judgement on me....unless i'm out boating, they nearly all show and at that juncture, who cares - - i'm nearly naked and i'm relatively certain they are not looking at my art work?!

LOL...that's probably true!

Did you get your tattoos earlier in your life, or after kids?  Just wondering because recently I've been thinking about getting one, and I had some web pages opened up looking at different pics.  My son and daughter came in and told me I was "too old" to get a tattoo!   What do your kids think about yours?

my kids all have a great deal of respect for me ink or not. however, my first piece was done on my 30th birthday. when my oldest daughter turned 21, i took her in to get a duplicate of it, which the artist drew on her freehand while looking at mine, same piece, same location on her, same colors. when mini me is old enough, should she also want this same piece...in we go. all other work, my 2nd, 3rd, etc., came with time. if i felt the need for a piece here or there, it had to be just the right art for the right area. like real estate! location, placement of such, and style are key.

oh, and i cannot imagine any of my kids, at any age, telling me i am too old for ink. piercing. the way i dress. or anything for that matter. it simply is disrespectful and unacceptable.

Re: Tats & Prejudices

When I first started getting tattoos there was a couple that used to come in and get tattooed. I ended up seeing them in a magazine photo shoot. Both were heavily covered. Both were grandparents. Old and young are just as much a state mind as they are a physical reality. I'm thirty four and kids at the skate park can't believe I've been skating longer than they've been alive.  But I don't feel 34. I feel 20 maybe. Hell, younger on some days.

Re: Tats & Prejudices

No one has ever said anything to my face about it if they have had a problem. The job I have now you can't have visible tattoos but they still hired me. I just wear a lab coat. Which is fine because it's 60 degrees year round in my area. Tattoos are so common now that people look at them differently. Their favorite athlete probably has one. It's like all prejudices, it fades with each new generation.
