take hard drive out of dell and put it in a hp

I have a HP laptop that the hard drive has gone bad. and i have a Dell that the is supper slow,and with out wifi. So i have check and the hard drives are the same older conection (Not sata). What do I need to do to make dell HD ready to put in the HP? Any info would be great. Thanks Tue, 11/03/2009 - 8:36pm

you will want to use the disks that came with the computer you are putting the drive into .. By operating disks, i think she's referring to the Operating System disks (XP) - Your HP may have also come with a drivers cd or a 'restore' CD. if it came with a "restore" CD, just boot up onto that CD and follow the on-screen prompts. If it came with just the OS (XP) and driver CD, install XP, then install the drivers for any hardware that doesnt work. THEN be sure to download and install the newest service pack from Microsoft and also ALL critical security updates, and optionally software/driver updates. Mon, 11/09/2009 - 12:57am

Theyre both laptop hard drives right? When i installed my new HD on my dell laptop it was INCREDIBLY simple- assuming you have all the operating disks. In the old computer thats slow- reformat the HD so its totally clean of all files. It should be something like, restore to factory settings (since its a dell you SHOULD have that option)
After that all you do is remove the HD and pop it into place in the other laptop. Power on and it will give you instructions on the screen. Depending if you already have a partitioned HD it might even have all the setup files stored in the partition for you so you wont need the disks- but in my case i needed the disks anyways so its good to have then handy just in case.
