Here is a neat trick to help speed up Firefox. Don't you hate it when it takes a page forever to load or you get the timed out error? This will speed up Firefox. I have done this on my pc and I have noticed a huge improvement.

Firefox Trick

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries (see pic below):

network.http.pipelining

network.http.proxy.pipelining

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows (the color of the word set matches the pic below):

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select

New->
Integer.
Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay"
and set its value to "0".
This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

ok guys, i tried to do the trick with Firefox and i accidentally added something. it goes like this: name=14/status=default/type=string/ value

my ? is how do i get rid of this.

julie if you added something new (instead of just modifying an existing value) you can edit it out in your prefs.js file. if you do this, i would highly recommend making a backup copy first in case you make a mistake. you need to completely shutdown Firefox - make sure it is not showing up in task manager. then find your prefs file. it should be in a folder someplace like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\JulieK[your computer username]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xyzkskdk.default[those letters before .default will be different]\ 

find your prefs.js file and open it with a text editor, like notepad. carefully delete your mistaken addition and save. reopen Firefox and check about:config to make sure it took.

hi smartmom and p(izzle). it may seem to you that it makes a difference, but it's actually in the programming code that 8 is the maximum value that can be recognized.

here's the code straight from mozilla:

look for this section - 

// hard upper limit on the number of requests that can be pipelined

i've just downloaded the Firefox code for version 2.0.0.14 (the current official release) and it is exactly the same as in the link above. so it's literally impossible for any number over 8 to have any effect greater than 8.

but it's not going to hurt you to set it higher - just letting you know it's not going to help. and if a bug surfaces in this area, then setting a non-allowed value could always cause problems. anyway, i hope this isn't coming across wrong - not trying to argue, just trying to help.

fyi - for the "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" value, 8 is the highest number that Firefox will recognize for this, so setting it to 30 will not provide any additional value above 8.

I don't take it as arguing. I was honestly asking you about because I didn't know the answer. Thanks for clearing it up for me. I'm going to go back in and change mine to 8 just to be safe. Again, thanks.

I'm not saying you are wrong but I had previously changed my about config settings and then they were reset at some point. My default was set at 15. Why would Firefox default it at 15 if it's known that setting it above 8 won't help?

Mine was at 8 and I did notice a HUGE difference at 30.  I even reset my sons and didn't tell him he asked if comcast came out because his internet was better Laughing

Yeah, I'm glad you posted this. I had reinstalled Firefox and forgot to tweak about config. I was wondering if something else was wrong. (Slaps forehead). So yeah big difference. I read that Firefox is actually tweaked for dialup not broadband.
