Slow......

Slow......

My pc is running extremely slow at the moment, can anyone recommend any free software which will prevent this and get rid of any viruses etc?

I like going to download.com and downloading the following programs: Spybot and Ad-Aware.  If you update them and do the searches, they're your best bet on freeware for ad-ware and spyware.  In addition, I like to scan for viruses using "Stinger" which is a McAfee application that is free and compact.  If you google "McAfee Stinger" it will lead you straight to the link that will directly download stinger onto your desktop.  Just double-click it to run a scan.
 
Secondly, you should open up your accessories folder in "All Programs" and find the "System Tools" folder.  Run the "Disk Cleanup".  I'm not worried about any old files, but if you'd like to clean up your machine, I would click all the boxes where there is a numeric in size after the description.  Bascially, click all the boxes and let it run.
 
Lastly, run the "Disk Defragmenter" from the same folder in "Accessories" --> System Tools.  This will kick all the fragments of programs and files on your computer, basically making it more efficient.
 
This is all the stuff someone you're paying to do it will do.
 
If none of these things work, you should let me know and I can suggest some more in-depth things like memory tests and updates, cleaning up your registry and start programs.
