Do we have any exercise fanatics out there? I was wanting to start a new Exercise or Fitness forum and while searching for such, came across one that Hubby started well over a year ago:

http://grownupgeek.com/weight

After reading it, I found some similarities that I though were worth sharing. "Walking." That is how it started for me about 2 yrs ago. Started by walking 1 mile M-F, every single day. Six months into it I am at 4.5 miles. One year later, 9-10 miles and when I can't get out to walk, I run on my treadmill. Now, two years into it and I walk out of doors when I want a change in scenery. Otherwise, I strengthen and tone on my Bowflex Blaze and alternate with a cardio incline hike on the treadmill. I purchased both this winter when it was too cold to walk out of doors. When I started 2 years ago, I weighed 110, I now fluctuate between 112-116. My gain is muscle (weighs more than fat). I'm 5'8", size 3. My neighbor started walking with me last September. Her start weight 132, size 9-10, 5'1". Six months later, she's a size 1, 104 pounds and looks fantastic. Walking. Who would of thought?

What works for you?

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

Here we go, i had started a new thread about the same subject, silly me. Well running and walking works best for me, but since I do my running and walking outdoors it's hard for me to get out there when it's HOT. So I started doing these video workouts called Hip-Hop Abs. They're awesome! i work my butt of and sweat like no other!! I got about 6 videos for $120.....best way to invest your money is in your health!!

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

i walk three miles every day, do yoga three times MWF and pilates/classical stretch twice a week.

I do not invest a lot of time in this...usually a half hour for walking and a half hour for y/p/cs each day. that is it. i eat pretty healthfully and drink lots of water.. and the occasional glass of wine, and like hot2na, i am mad for sweets.

the resistance training i do uses no weights. i find weights totally affects my flexibility and i am able to maintain great muscle tone with the pilates and classical stretch.

i also have been reading that lifting weights can cause bulging of the veins, especially in thinner people. i never paid attention to that until i saw a picture of sarah jessica parkers hands and feet in a candid pic -  her body looks nowhere near 40, but her hands and feet look 60! no matter how hot your bod or how pretty your face, the hands speak volumes about age.

How funny Dance Girl. You just made me look at my hands. I better start taking better care of them. My face looks really young but my hands are getting a beat down.

I'm not a doctor, but I'm guessing this is due to an increased blood flow through the muscle tissue? And about the hands thing-yes you can see that on Madonna aswell.

But I doubt it's because of them lifting weights-I believe it's because plastic surgery for hands hasn't been invented (yet) Eye-wink

Yes for sure, some people are more genetically disposed to it than others.  You're lucky and I hope I am too. :D   But,  I have always had this weird phobia about creepy old lady hands.

Here's all I've read:

Source: Mark A. W. Andrews, professor of physiology at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine

"When exercise begins, the heart's rate and strength of contraction increases and blood is quickly pumped into the arteries. As this is occurring, systolic blood pressure increases linearly with exercise intensity, rising to nearly 200 mmHg during high intensity aerobic exercise (and to more than 400 mmHg during weight lifting). Diastolic pressure, on the other hand, changes very little with aerobic exercise (although it rises during weight lifting). Simultaneously, the internal diameters of veins and venules narrow in a process called venoconstriction, forcing the flow of blood forward to the heart and enhancing their ability to receive blood coming from the capillaries. Overall, this process helps decrease the pressure in the venules and veins to at most about five mmHg.

Venous volume and pressure thereby decrease and are thus not the basis for the bulging. Instead, the process occurring in the capillaries as a result of the rise in arterial blood pressure during exercise causes plasma fluid otherwise resting in these tiny tributaries to be forced out through the thin vessel walls and into compartments surrounding the muscles. This process, known as filtration, causes a swelling and hardening of the muscle that is noticed during exercise. As a result of this swelling, cutaneous veins are pushed toward the skin surface, flatten to some extent, and appear to bulge. Such veins are more visible in persons with less subcutaneous fat."

So...today I ran the first time ever on a treadmill in the gym. To my surpise, I found it to be much easier than running on the street! I was able to almost double my usual running time. Even if with incline. Anyone else experience this?

On a treadmill. you will be able to run a very noticable faster pace with the same effort and heartrate and for a longer time.  Running on the street, you are pushing your weight across a horizontal plane and that takes more work - mostly your butt and the backs of your legs.  Running slight hills makes a huge difference.  On a treadmill, you are keeping up with a moving belt while your mass stays in the same place.  Your legs are not pushing your body through space - an incline adds effort but your mass is still in the same place.  So that's why it's easier.

I look forward to overnight trips because I love the occasional treadmill workout.  Because I know I can go faster and sooner on a treadmill, I know to start my speed at 8mph (7.5 pace) and within a minute or two, Ill bump it up and cruise at 8.5-9 mph for the next 45 minutes.  That's a WAY faster pace I can sustain for 45 min when I'm running on the street.  I can't run anywhere near that fast on the road.

And isn't it weird when you just stop all of a sudden and get off?  Heh.. it's like you have no control over your legs and they just want to walk off on their own.  I know you're supposed to taper down, but sometimes I'm short on time and it's just funny to have your legs walk away without you telling them to.  I know... I'm goofy.

But back on the machine... with my legs moving that fast on a belt, there's little room for error.  I have to concentrate and I can't be looking around the room or at a TV unless it's right in front of me.  I keep my eyes to myself if there are other types of "distractions".  And unless there's a water bottle holder on the console, I do without.

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

Ok I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing the treadmill thing!

And yes..it's funny when you get off all of a sudden. Kinda like you went rollerskating for a few hours and when you put on your normal shoes, you have to figure out how to walk normally again..lol.

I felt kinda dizzy today when I got off, was strange. But I loved the fact it has a Tv and stuff...I'm looking forward to my next treadmill workout, hehe

yes! i initially purchased the tread for my home gym because when it is 105 degrees at 6am, i need to be running indoors, not out. the only drawback is the risk of foot injury, which is simply due to repetitive landing. this article here is excellent and a real must read for tread users! especially new ones.

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

So i've been in the gym since June 1, 3 times a week no failing. All was well, until the other day i noticed that when i get off the elyptical (after about 25-35 mins) that my right foot was tingling and kinda felt a little numb plus the arch of my foot was somewhat sore. I pretty much ignored it, but now my calves are sore and feel bloated and my ankles are swollen and i just feel pretty stiff.. I'm wondering it its my sneakers, are there certain types of sneakers that you would need for different types of workouts?

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

Well I just came from the podiatrist and yes i strained all the muscles in both feet. She told me i could still use the elliptical if i wanted to, but to keep the incline at 20 or below or above 30 to avoid strain on my calves/ankles etc. So im on meds for the swelling and was told to put ice packs on every evening for 5 days. Ugh, I hope this works.

I am back in full swing, but avoiding that "devil" machine. LOL. The feet FINALLY went down after the long drive to VA. Funny I know, but the morning of July 4, I had my slim feet back. So I am back to normal in the gym, but will be careful never to overdo it again on any machine. Thanks for asking 2na

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

I gave away my NordicTrack to buy an elliptical trainer and ended up selling it for the exact reason you are writing about - numb feet and toes after about 30 minutes.

I have heard from other people that had it happen too, and I've tried to figure it out.  I think it has to do with the constant angle of your foot in relation to your lower leg and also the constant pressure on the bottom of your foot.  On an elliptical machine, your foot stays more or less in an acute angle and never extended the other way.  The ball of the foot also maintains constant contact with the "pedal".  This could compress a nerve pathway or blood vessel over a long period of time causing the numbness which might be similar to a carpal tunnel injury.  Uhhh.. would they call it "tarsal tunnel"?

If you really want to make the elliptical trainer work, try this - loosen your shoe strings a bit but not to the point that your shoes could come off.  Then make an effort to quickly and slightly lift your feet on maybe every 3rd or 4th revolution on the upstroke, extending your toes down.  Be sure and keep a good grip on your handles or poles when you do this - we don't want to fall.

Try different things and do what you need to do to stop your foot from going numb - your foot is telling you something and even though it stops tingling after your workout, it's not something to live with and ignore.

Like I said... I sold my Ellipse and bought another NordicTrack Pro off ebay.  IMO, the NordicTrack "Pro" model is one of the best-made non-impact indoor exercisers ever made.

Realizing we have favorite machines and since you are going to a gym, try alternating days with the treadmill.  I'm assuming you prefer the smooth glide of the elliptical and want avoid impact.  If you try a treadmill, start slow and practice "smooth walking" which is being conscious of and trying to minimize your bounce and impact.

Good luck... please post back here to let us know if anything worked to stop your foot from going to sleep.

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

On the elliptical, I don't think it mattters as long as your arches are supported.  You aren't really doing anything special with your ankles or doing impact type stuff where cushion is important.   For walking and running on the treadmill, you could either go for activity-specific shoes (walking for walking, running for running) or running shoes for both walking or running.

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

yes. and different types of running shoes as well. i use a different type for street running than i do on my treadmill. i prefer nike shox turbo+VI for my treadmill, and the nike shox experience for pavement/street running. but everyone has their own preference. stevie has also made some good recs. look for his posts here as well.

related to the treadmill injury, this happened to me when i first got my tread. if you are using the incline feature on the treadmill, you will experience arch pain and soreness. this is common. running inside is so different than outside. your foot lands in the same spot and position each time. thus being repetitive and causing the aches. good shoes will help. also, give it a rest for a few days. once it feels healed, then get back on with the new shoes and you will notice/feel a difference.

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

I love walking and it's good for my dogs too. I think people forget dogs need walking for their health and happiness as well too. I have just started back into walking recently (since we bought the house, we have a good neighborhood for walking again..no traffic lol). I had gained alot of weight and had to correct my diet so I could drop some pounds first because, sadly, walking like 3 blocks had my legs breaking out and my lungs about to explode. I'm doing pretty well with it now, I just have a hard time finding time to do it lol.

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

Am I the only one that lifts weights? LOL!

I have been working out on and off for the last 10+ yrs. Mostly weights, but I try to do better w/cardio. I just started back to exercising (3 wks ago) from a 1.5 yr long hiatus.

Besides lifting weights, I'm trying to add pilates and S-Factor to my routine but haven't figured out just how to work it in yet. Usually I lift 5 days/wk (weekends off); focusing on different body parts most days and then circuit train one-two days. I'm thinking about doing weights M W F and work in either walking or pilates or S Factor on Tues and Thurs. I have tried to walk in our neighborhood but these hills are killing my back. Maybe I need better shoes? I have addidas cross trainers. Maybe they aren't the right shoes for the job.

I used to work out at a gym but now work out at home with dumbbells and a bench. I'm only 4'10" and am too short for many machines. There's a lot you can do with simple dumbbells! I like to "pyramid", meaning I start with lower weights and higher reps. As I increase the weight, I decrease the rep. I usually do sets of 12, then 10, then 8. I also work in different ab exercises.

Reading some of y'all's heights and weights is motivating...LOL at 4'10" I am around 107 lbs and it's NOT muscle (yet!). My best weight seems to be 97 but I've got some work ahead of me before I can hit that goal.

Glad you got this topic going! Laughing

Edit:  just re-read some posts and saw that others do use weights; sorry for the goofy opening question.  I should have asked if I was the only one that preferred lifting weights to cardio...

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

lol, it's actually pretty easy to get used to. I was the same way when I started; I was lucky to get 2 successful jumps in a row over the rope, but after about a week or so of trying I can go for 15 minute straight, and only mess up a few times.

It's surprisingly exhausting at first too.

I tried to learn (again) last year in front of my brother's 3 girls.  It was quite a show.  They tried to teach me but I can't do a timed circle with my hips... I can do front-to-back but I can't swish.  Smiling

Yes.  somedays I'm not as energetic as others and I resist doing it.  bah-da-bam!  haha!  Sorry... I couldn't resist.  OK.. I'm being stupid.

No.  I should use my weights but I don't.  I'm lazy.  They're not fun for me and it's difficult for me to do something like that regularly if it's not fun.  I love running outdoors.  I'm at the point in the year where I do 6 miles daily except on days I ride my bike.

There's something about holding a 160 heart rate for 45-50 minutes.  It pulls the stress away.  It puts me in a zone.  I can't get that drug doing weights but I know I should lift 3 days a week.

i totally agee with you. and it is NOT fun. there are days that i am so dragging *ass* that i have to bargain with myself to get through it. however, this article did it for me, and husband-of-mine, who is only 3 years younger. he thinks i am a "genetic freak" because i've managed to maintain my same size and weight since 8th grade. four kids and 19.5 years of marriage later, i feel and look fabulous! but i also enjoy sweets like there is no tomorrow!

WOW I'm envying you right now,Tuna! I just recently tried out some older clothes and was really disappointed. I really cut back on sweets ( I love sweets-well actually almost every type of food out there!!) and other unhealthy stuff. I lift weights 4-5 times a week and if I'm not at the gym, I run. Somehow I'm still not satisfied with the results. I dunno what I'm doing wrong, maybe my genes just suck??

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

Some of the steps here i had to take in order to get to where i am today. (currently weigh 155 5'11 Smiling, trying to reach 165)

#1. Start off eating 3 meals a day, and gradually grow up to 6 meals a day. I started at 3, then like every two weeks id add an extra. To get my body use to having food in my system.

#2. I also lifted weights 3-4 times a week, did the mass gain technique where you lift heavier weights at less repitition.

# 3 one of the biggest thing i learned was resting. For a while i was wondering why i still looked the same. (i lost alot of sleep because of school, homework, girlfriend etc..)

#4. Time management, push yourself out to do it even if its raining

#5. I got rid of all the negatives in my life, especially those who had something to complain about every day. I found life more enjoyable after i stopped talking to those kind of people. To be honest those people really brought me down. I was never in a good mood, just because their personality grew onto me, and i adapted. Now i got a smile every single day on my face, AND my body looks right hehe, although i am trying to gain some more. If you feel right, then everything else about you will be right, thats how i feel.

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates! (Bowflex)

does anyone else use a bowflex machine? i have the blaze and as summer heat approaches, i will refer to it more and more and spend basically no time on the pavement. i like the fact that it gives me a great deal of resistance. and that i can leg press more than i weigh. *love that part!*  i read an article on resistance training in older adults and now i'm pretty much hooked.

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

Walking is a big help Laughing I started off with that and now I'm building up to jogging and running (I hate running, though!). It's a lot of fun to work out. Sometimes I'm really tired, but I'll give it my all when I start.

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

regarding shoes, what do any of you runners/walkers think about the idea that the cushioned/stabilized/motion control/pump/etc shoes out there now, made with the latest and greatest technology are actually bad for your feet and body? there have been some studies showing that running barefoot or in shoes that are as close to barefoot running as possible is the best thing for your feet, legs, knees, back. now, i personally am not going barefoot on the streets where i live, but i'm trying to decide what kind of shoes to buy, so if you have any personal experience with this, i'd like to hear your opinions.

i don't run much because it hurts my knees and back. but i walk 10 miles a day. my feet are very sensitive and i get blisters on the bottom, top, sides, and in between my toes. i've tried asics, new balance, reeboks, and currently have some adidas trail running shoes that i put extra cushioned insoles in. i went to a runner's shoes store and got professionally fitted for the asics and two separate people there agreed on the best shoe for me and it still didn't do any better than the ones i picked out for myself after doing research online. and i bought runner's socks there too which didn't help any more than my smartwool socks i normally wear. my feet seem to defy all convention and hurt in seemingly the most comfortable shoes.

so, in my endless search for shoes that don't hurt my feet, i came across these barefoot running sites that suggest that if you are going to wear shoes to run or walk in, you should find shoes that are very thin soled, with no cushioning. they suggest puma h-streets the most or some other similar puma shoes. there are also nike "free" shoes but they have a bigger heel than recommended. does anyone do running or long-distance walking in shoes like the puma h-streets or other flat, thin, uncushioned shoes? i'm kind of scared of what this might do to my sensitive feet, but maybe it's the thing i need to make them less sensitive....

Thank you for the information about the shoes. That is my biggest problem finding some that actually work. I would love a fitness forum Hot2Na.

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

Some bio-mechanics just can't be fixed by shoes or inserts.  Podiatrists who are good at sports-type corrections are rare and even then, sometimes THEY can't figure things out.  I assume someone has watched your stride and gait from several angles.   Are you a clopper, heel-striker or a ball-striker?  Did they tell you to try to alter anything?

I'm lucky... my foot lands where it is "supposed to".  I land on the outside edge of my heel and roll inward as my foot rolls forward and I spring off of the middle-inside ball area.  You can see this wear pattern on the sole of my shoes.  I use Asics DS Trainers and support my higher-than-normal arches with Powersteps inserts.  I use Powersteps in everything but my sandals.

My wife's feet used to bother her.  She's a pharmacist and although she only works a few days a week, the day is long and her feet hurt.  She tried a few types of running/walking shoes at my advice (even Powersteps) but the shoes that finally worked are Easyspirit Traveltime.  She absolutely loves them.  But I don't think they would make good running shoes...

As far as the techno-shoes go, I have never used the pumps but a few years ago, I was given a pair of Nike "robot" shoes to try.  These had a mechanism that supposedly adjusted as you ran.  They were heavy, uncomfortable (for me), and not very well cushioned.

Barefoot running?  No.  Never.  Not for me anyway.  I like my knees.  Haha!  I even wear runners if I'm doing my run on a beach.  The one time I ran barefoot in the sand, I got a huge blister on my big toe.  Massive, puffy blister.  When I drained it, it created a puddle and kids gathered wanting to know when the wading pool was going to be ready.  Eye-wink This was from a short 4-mile run close to the water where the sand is wet and packed.  I'll never do that again.

I have used a type of shoe called "racing flats" which are minimally cushioned and very light.  The idea is to train in a heavier shoe and wear the flats on race day to give you "happy feet".  Flats are typically good for 100 miles or less then you pitch them.

So anyway... I do prefer pavement AND cushioned shoes.  I hope you find something that works.

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

Stevie, I saw once on tv about this guy in Texas who looks at your body and can tell you what you need work on. For example, this cop had misaligned hips and the fitness/health guy saw that right away. I wish I could remember but I can't right now. I would love to see someone like that, because I know my legs are unbalanced also and that is what causes pain with the running.

One time I had a running injury which needed therapy and a sports-injury specialist looked at my walking and running mechanics.  I have one foot that lands a bit differently when I run (I sprained it really bad in HS football) and he glued a 1/8" piece of rubber on some arch supports I was already using.  I don't think he knew much cause that thing made the problem worse.  I tore it off after 3 days.

I would like to meet someone like you are talking about who knows their stuff.

Re: Running, Walking, & shoes!

has anyone tried the MBT line of shoes? a swiss made fitness shoe that claims to change your life forever. *it better do dishes!* i'm thinking that for $149 for a pair of sport sandals, and $300 for the trainers, i am going to need some "word of mouth" feedback first! if not, i'll just have to buy them so i can provide the feedback to others.

anyone?
