Do we have any exercise fanatics out there? I was wanting to start a new Exercise or Fitness forum and while searching for such, came across one that Hubby started well over a year ago:

http://grownupgeek.com/weight

After reading it, I found some similarities that I though were worth sharing. "Walking." That is how it started for me about 2 yrs ago. Started by walking 1 mile M-F, every single day. Six months into it I am at 4.5 miles. One year later, 9-10 miles and when I can't get out to walk, I run on my treadmill. Now, two years into it and I walk out of doors when I want a change in scenery. Otherwise, I strengthen and tone on my Bowflex Blaze and alternate with a cardio incline hike on the treadmill. I purchased both this winter when it was too cold to walk out of doors. When I started 2 years ago, I weighed 110, I now fluctuate between 112-116. My gain is muscle (weighs more than fat). I'm 5'8", size 3. My neighbor started walking with me last September. Her start weight 132, size 9-10, 5'1". Six months later, she's a size 1, 104 pounds and looks fantastic. Walking. Who would of thought?

What works for you?

So, has anyone tried P90x? It's supposed to mix up the routine every so often so you don't plateau. I'm thinking of giving it a try.

A friend of mine took Belly Dancing lessons, she loved it.  Once I move, i'm hoping to find something in my new area.  She said after her first lesson, her stomach muscles actually hurt!

I've pretty much hit a wall..lost 16lbs and haven't lost a pound in 2 weeks. I'm all ears if anyone has any suggestions. My workout routine has benn 25-30 min on treadmill then 25 on elliptical machine. Afterwards some weight lifting-mostly arms and end with crunches.

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

Yep, your body has adjusted to the workout. It does only what it needs to do now to accomplish what it's used to doing. Like Tuna said, switch up the exercises, reps, and I'd add a lot more leg workouts (squats, lunges). The more muscle you have the more calories are needed even at rest. Working the legs hard will give full-body benefits.

Helps to throw some fun and different exercises in too, so you don't get bored and give up. Yoga or something.

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

I cycle/spin at the YMCA. I did Jazzercise for a long time--thought I was fit until I joined the Y. In the year I joined, I have lost 45 pounds and gone down 3 dress sizes. Cycle is great for toning the legs/butt!

I also weight lift and got to a point where I was really, really toned. Then I tore a muscle in my bicep doing a chest press and, well...my weightlifting has not gone well since then. Just when I was looking good, too!

Sure you can do it!   Do you have MS Excel?  I wrote a great weight loss tracker made especially for geeks where you enter your daily weight and it adjusts the graph and tells you how much you have left to lose.  Give me a yell and I'll customize one for you.  Very high on the nifty factor and it's a popular download off my website.  Here's a sample:

It can be modified for some one that wants to add weight.  PM me where you are, how much you want to gain and the time period (goal).  But it just does weight and doesn't distinguish between fat, muscle, or monthly waterweight gain. Smile

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

Has anyone ever tried Poi or Hoop as an alternative to regular exercise?  I currently take classes and you end up burning off an insane amount of calories in a short time.  Plus, you end up learning a cool talent at the same time.

Other than that, I do elliptical, so I wont ruin my knees, and heavy weight lifting to burn fat.

Also, don't forget to stretch as part of your routine.  You'll thank yourself for it!

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

I have a trainer 2 x a week and do some type of cardio ( I like to mix it up) 40 min. usually twice a day, can you tell I don't have a life??  lol. For me the Summit (some call it Stairmaster) and Elliptical get me sweating more than the treadmill but I do hills level 20 on it a few days a week just to break it up. The days w/ trainer usually lt. warmup then 30 min intense weights/ cardio. Upper body and legs I do with her. I tried walking running in my neighborhood, but my back hurts on the pavement but not on the treamill...

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

Is there a park in your area? You could try running over football fields, like I do. grass is a LOT easier on the entire body, plus with the football field markings, it also makes measuring out the amount of running distance you do really easy.

Usually I'll run from end zone to end zone about 20-26 times, jogging for one and then sprinting as fast as I possibly can every other one.

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

For the past three weeks, I've been running 10 miles, 3 times a week alternating 6-mile days and taking two days off a week.  The road I do my long runs on is so beautiful and peaceful; it's motivating.

So last summer, a horse farm on my running route had babies.  If the horses are out, I always stop to take a breather, let the sweat dry, and say hi to them.  They know me well and always come up to the fence greet me and get their necks scratched.  I took the two pictures below with my phone about a year ago.  Notice the brown colt on the right barely visible peeking around his mother:

And the white one:

Well last week, I had my camera with me and here the "babies" are a year later:

Cute? Smile

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

Hey stevie, do you ever have any problems with shinsplints, running on all of that asphault? I used to run on the roads, but I'm shinsplint prone, so I now run only on bike paths and grass.

But wow, 10 miles?? Holy buckets. I usually run 3 miles twice a week, and 3 x a week I do HIIT (interval training), running back and forth over measured out football fields. I think I'm built more for burst activity rather than long distance. 10 miles would kill me. Wink

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

I had shin splints once - mine were located right in the middle on the front of my lower legs (both) and was brought on from overexertion from doing hard intervals up a hill where I used to live.  In my case, the ligaments that attached to the front of my shin bone became inflamed.  Those ligaments attach to muscles that wrap around and help you "push off".  Other similar inflamation injuries happen all up and down the tibia and they are all referred to as shin splints.  My theory is that overexertion and/or improper form is the main cause.

Overexertion could be me being stupid and sprinting up a 20% grade full blast or even someone who is overweight trying to lose weight and is putting stress on those "push off" muscles during a fast walk.  Overexertion could also take place as a result of a pronation problem which might be what's happening to you.

Do you have a running specialty store?  If you are near a city, call around or check their websites.  You will be able to tell if they simply sell shoes or if they know their stuff about running physics and biomechanics.  Some of those guys and gals are usually good at spotting step problems that can cause lower leg and knee injuries and can recommend shoes that correct over and under pronation.  Are you tall?  If a runner is tall, the simple shock of the force of long legs just running can bring on those inflamation injuries.  Grass and dirt eases that shock.

As for me, I'm 5'9" and have a pretty efficient gait and foot roll.  I've had supposed experts (none of us are experts in this field) tell me that my wear pattern on my soles is what they like to see.  It shows a landing on the outer heel, an inward roll toward the center and stopping right in the middle of the ball of the foot, which is exactly where pushoff is supposed to then occur then the pushoff continues straight.  I just now took a photograph of a pair of my current runners and you'll see the wear on the outer heel and the wear indicators worn down right in the middle at the hinge.  Click the photograph for the enlarged image and you see the middle wear better.

                                 (click for bigger)

Anyway.. what this kind of roll does is absorb shock and aligns the foot.  It's a smooth gliding roll.  My foot stopping the roll at the right time puts the foot in the best alignment with the lower leg for a good biomechanical push off.  Under pronators and over pronators will show a wear pattern in the push-off area to one side or the other and that will lead to shin splint, achilles, and plantar fascia type injuries.

When you go to a running store, take your shoes that you run in on the street.  If pronation is your problem, someone good can look at the wear pattern, watch you walk, and look at a wet footprint to see what type of shoe you need.  It might be a girl so be sure your feet are clean and smell nice.  haha!

I do put all of my miles in on hard surfaces.  Ya know, some people say you should never run on concrete because asphalt is much softer.  Well I have fallen down on both and I can tell you that they are pretty much the same as far as a human vs either one of them is concerned.  The reason that asphalt seems easier to run on is because of its lubrication properties.  Your shoe sole is allowed to expand under your weight and slightly slide because the surface is smoother.  On old worn asphalt, the exposed rounded rocks also give this effect.  However concrete is concrete and usually when your shoe plants down it sticks.  That's why asphalt seems easier to run on.  Another of my theories anyway. Tongue

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

Yep, that's exactly where I feel the shin splint pain too. And I used to just try and power through the pain until it was excruciating, and then I'd be down for days, unable to train again. I still get them even doing things as simple as jumping rope, although not as bad. I do tend to (way) over train though. My trainers run me through the mill, and treat me like a horse. Running through any weather, sunshine, mud, up and down bleachers, cold, high heat, hills, various angled sidewalks, you name it.

I think I probably do have bad running form, since I tend to lean forward a little, like I'm a bit top-heavy, and slap my feet down sort of hard. I try to stay vertical and land my feet gently, but after becoming exhausted I tend to slip right back into the bad form all too often. And I never had  any custom shoes made. Just an expensive pair of Nike cross trainers, that I've used for a couple years now without swapping out for new ones. I'm 5'11 so height probably isn't an issue? Looking at the wear on my shoes, the outer heel is worn, like yours, and then the middle where the ball is, but a bit more toward the toes, but there is also some wear toward the outside, right behind the pinky-toe. Over-pronation would have the wear on the inside of the shoe, right?

Lol, yea, I think that I originally got my shin splints from running on concrete sidewalks that werent level. Aside from the hills, they also would be lower on one of the sides usually, varying throughout the run. It's semi-hilly out here.

Have ya ever gotten one of those shoe-girls' phone numbers? lol. I have to confess, I have been told that I have a handsome foot! Tongue That'd be some story, picking up my next wife because she likes my wheels! Smile

Re: Running, Walking, Weights, and Pilates!

Oh.. and something else about injuries that I have learned through the years the hard way..  The ones to pay attention to immediately are the ones that have a wincing, burning sensation.  That burning feeling is actually the beginning of a tear or strain and it is something that you don't want to run through.  Stop immediately, rest it right then and there, and walk home or call someone who cares.  After you get home, 800mg ibuprofen, gently rub, then ice 15 on, 30 off for the next several hours.  Take the next one or two days off from that particular activity and begin again slow being aware.

Yeah.. I've been hurt before.
