Router Problem

My son is having connection problems. The internet works when you connect straight to the modem but when you hook up the router, he can't get an internet connection. The message says "limited or no connectivity" and the internet connection light on the modem just flashes. I seem to remember reading somewhere recently that this particular issue had something to do with passwords and encryption but I've been researching so many computer problems lately I could have made that up (ha ha). Anyone have any suggestions?

Have 3 computers running on a router and they tend to Fight for connectivity knocking each other off.

What you can try is

1) right click on no connectivity warning and get ready to click on repair button

2) Unplug the Modem for 10 seconds then replug it

3) as the modem is rebooting hit the "repair" option on the disconnected computer

Don't know what kind of router you are working with, but I have a netgear router and it has the same problem after every time there is a power outage. The easiest thing to do to get it to work properly for sure is to use the hard reset button (should be really small and needs to be pressed with a pin or something). Hold it down until the whole router resets and then set up the router settings like you did the first time you used it. It is annoying to do, but it works for sure every time.

Here's some quick suggestions, it could be a host of things.

Verify connectivity to the router by typing in the gateway IP address of the router - usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 - in the web based browser window.

You can verify the gateway address by opening Start - Run - CMD - ipconfig (theres a space here)/all. Leave this window open.

If you can connect (also requires username and password - refer to this link if it's not set - http://grownupgeek.com/blog-modems-routers ) then you know you have connectivity between the computer and the network device. 

Typically it's a problem with DNS and in the Run window check the DNS server address(es) with those in the router configuration screen. If they're not there, connect directly to the modem and then write down the DNS IP addresses using the Run command above, then configure the router to see those addresses.

That's usually the most common problem, however I could write for the next three hours on every aspect to check. 

Probably the easiest thing to do is power down everything - modem, router and computer for 60 seconds and then power cycle everything back up.

There is also a factory reset button on the router (usually a small little grey thing that you push with a pen). Hold that down for ten seconds to return to default settings.

when you "cycle back on" make sure to turn on your modem first, let it establish it's connection with the ISP before starting back up your router. My modem has 5 lights on the front but that only one that matters is the DSL light. I wait for it to turn from flashing red to flashing green (it's not completely set up yet, but it has an IP address at this point), then turn on your router. Since your most likely functions as a NAT and provides DHCP on the LAN interface it won't need to establish a connection with the modem before it can start establishing connections with your computer(s), but give it a few moment anyway before turning back on your computer or if you want you can use the cmd window

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

this will be just as good as

shutdown -f -r -t 00
