any help thatl' help get rid of it is appreciated

not sure if this will help, but today i noticed ads on this site and other sites i browse frequently that were never there before. i thought my PC had an infection and so i ran all my security scanners. well after trying a few other tricks that didn't fix anything, i tried reinstalling Firefox on top of my existing Firefox (i was afraid of loosing my bookmarks and didn't think to just export them) and that cleared things up. i cleaned my registry too.
Yeah, I'm going to throw this in, because of the formatting comment, that you might want to start backing things up as you go along if you can... if you come across the bsod it might be too late...
granted we don't know how serious your problem is... but if there are some things that you ABSOLUTELY can't live without on that computer, back them up now... hopefully you won't need to format or anything, but it's a good idea to back things up anyway... just in case.

random question, if pc infection becomes overwhelming and no remedy can be found, is reformatting a safe option?
along with what was mentioned below the 'google pack' offers 'spyware doctor' for free. works great. hope this helps.
You'll probably (if it's that bad and you don't want to format) end up using a few different things such as combofix, or smitrem etc... so instead of my trying to fix it for you from here, I'll try and help you rather... since I'm less likely to break things that way... and we need to get this thread started anyway so others can help...
Okay, so you mentioned ZLOB TROJANS, so I googled: zlob removal vista
This page came up:

You can google similar things for anything else your anti-virus finds... just be careful... you want to look for things like smitfraudfix, combofix, rougue remover, vundofix.... also finding sites where a user posts a question about how to remove such and such virus with people answering... for some reason I don't trust the 'BlahBlahVirus Remover' sites... but that's just me, for all I know they work perfectly...
I'm not an expert on this by any means... I'm just trying to get you off to a start... and bumping the topic so that maybe an expert does stumble across it
Till then why don't you specify some symptoms?
As far as rootkits are concerned, you're going to find yourself downloading a 'fix' to run in safemode that will continue to run while booting... maybe multiple fixes depending on the rootkits you have.
And I'll go ahead and cover Hubby's usual fix for this: Buy a Mac.

Did you run Spybot search & destroy and Ad-Aware if not both are free programs. You can also run a check though panda (its a good free second opinion AV).
I think with any computer that spybot and ad-aware are a must and hey there both FREE! I run them both on my pc once a month
OH and anti virus wise I love NOD32 and I agree say no to Norton!
