Re: How do i disable icons in toolbar

I can probably do better in msconfig than learning a new program. So just disable the things that are pissing me off under startup?

Yup.  Just be sure you aren't disabling something you need.  Look up the .exe if your not sure.

Re: How do i disable icons in toolbar

Most of those are start up programs and I think they used to be called "Terminate and Stay Residents" or TSR's.  They are basically programs that start automatically when Windows loads.  Some you need like your wireless software, AV and firewall and some you don't really need or want running in the background like that Kodak thing.  You can usually right-click on the icon and "disable" or "exit" but it will reload when you restart Windows.  Sometimes, there is a means to stop it from auto-loading in the "options" choice in the right-click menu.

You can stop many of those you don't need from auto-loading using MSconfig (Start/Run/Msconfig) but instead, I recommend using a free application called StartupCPL:  http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

It's more safe than MSconfig and it will show you what programs automatically load and will allow you to uncheck them to cause them not to load the next time Windows starts.  It's wise to research the web before you disable any of those so that you know what you are disabling.  If something doesn't work right, with Mike's program you can always recheck it to have it start up again.

He also has one called StartUpMonitor (http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml) which alerts you when a software install attempts to put an auto-loading program in your startup list.  It allows you to approve or deny the auto-loading program.

I use both.  Be careful what you deny with StartUpMonitor.  You want to allow the ones that say "cleanup" or "run once" since they are one-time runs and will cleanup/delete the install routine that the installer dumped into a temporary folder somewhere.  Feel free to deny the ones that say "register reminder" or similar.

Like I said.. some things you need, some things you don't.  When you start cleaning house, check out the list on a site like http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ to see if you actually need that particular program running in the background or if it will be yet another needless drain on your resources.
