HELP!!! I'm trying to connect to my computer from another for work. The main computer ("carpet" computer) is in one building and the other ("ceramic" computer) is across the lot (flooring store obviously). For the life of me, I can't tap into the carpet computer through remote desktop. The carpet is XP Professional, and the ceramic is Vista Pro. That shouldn't make a difference.

Neither is set up wireless. While I'm on the ceramic computer at remote desktop, I put in the carpet computer IP, my user id, and password. It doesn't work. I even tried tapping into the carpet from my Mom's computer. What in the he@* am I doing wrong?? I need to get into the carpet computer from the other building, because the flooring program we use is on my computer. The carpet computer in turn, is connected to a plug n play which contains our program.

Any help will be greatly appreciated....AND STOP MY CUSSING!!!Yell

Re: Remote desktop

For the record...a Vista machine CAN connect via RDP to a Windows XP Pro machine.

We do this all the time in my office as we are running 3 phsyical Vista machines, 5 virtual Vista test machines and 165 Windows XP Pro machines.

You will need a couple of XP Pro patches to update your XP Pro machine to be available on the Vista machine. These make changes to the protocols of your network adapter.

The main change will be updating your RDP on the XP Pro machine. Here is the Microsft KB on that:

Re: Remote desktop

There are alot of programs out there that are going to be easier to set up and use than the stock Windows version...

- Remote Administrator
- Putty
- Remote Desktop Control
- Anyplace Control

Re: Remote desktop

Are they both on the same LAN? If they are, it shouldn't be a problem. What kind of software are you using? I'm not sure how to use the build-in remote desktop for Vista, but I know with the one for XP, you need to make sure the XP Machine allows remote desktop (which can be configured in the Remote tab of the computer's system properties. If anything, you can also try VNC (which is what I personally like to use). Hope this helps!

Re: Remote desktop

Thanks for the help.  According to what I found, a Vista system can't get on an XP Pro system (figures!!).  I ended up signing up for gotomypc.com.
