I have done this once before and dread calling Dell to find out how to do it again. I need to remove my previous version of windows because it has f'ed up and reinstall without the disc.

Anyone know how?

Re: Reinstalling Windows

If windows is preinstalled on your dell and you want to do a factory reinstall (wipes out virtually ALL viruses and makes your computer as if it just came out of the box):

open my computer

double click on c drive

choose to view the contents of the hidden folder--if prompted

open dell folder

open utilities folder

open DSR folder

click on yellow triangle that says "boot dsr"

and then follow the screen prompts.

tip: dont be connected to the internet until you get the reinstall complete.

also, before you connect to the internet--be sure to turn on the windows firewall (and windows automatic updates if you didnt do that during windows setup.)

Also, turn off file sharing and turn off remote access, etc.

after those steps, connect to internet and obtain windows updates, restart as prompted.

edit:  be sure to use antivirus program and a good firewall.

Re: Reinstalling Windows

Hi Pat,

I'm here just browsing the forum and came across this post and thought to myself wow, this is a great way to reinstall XP instead of having to look for the reinstall CD I seem to have used over 10x's in the past few years. But, to my dismay while following your instructions I noticed in my Dell folder I do not have a "utilities file." I've had this laptop for quite some time, well my boyfriend had it and I took over after having to constantly fix his mistakes of downloading viruses, worms, etc...
Any idea why I don't have that file?

Thnx!
G.

Have you tried a Windows search for it
