My personal recovery shake after a hard workout w/weights is: 65grams of dextose, 45 grams of whey protein, and 5grams of creatine (mixed w/water)
Ooh, that adds a little something to my protein shake
I only drink my protein shake in the morning though--how much of a workout should I do before I need a recovery drink?
20 miles? haha! No... I think this thing is only about 200 calories so you could drink it as a meal or snack - workout or not. But regarding "needing" a recovery drink, I don't know. My way of thinking is that when it's time to eat, it's time to eat. I hate to workout after eating so I do my workout on empty so that it's right before a meal. If I have put in a tough one, the sooner I can get carbs in, the better.
Here's my own "made-up wisdom" on % carb/protein. When doing medium-high aerobic level type stuff, it is good to eat 75% carbs with 25% proteins and a small amt of fat. This keeps things on an even keel and avoids insulin spikes. It is estimated that a muscle group loses its store of glycogen between 20 and 30 minutes. Then the body taps into fat stores and tries to keep up with the body's fuel needs. This is why you should stay hydrated - the process of converting fat to glycogen uses water and you also need water to cool.
If you are trying to lose weight, this is the reason to increase your workout time to 45 minutes since the "fat-conversion" period doesn't kick in until after 20 minutes. I'm always trying to lose that "last 5 pounds".. ;) If I could stay away from the chips, the cheese fries and the beer, I might be successful. But what the hell...
Oh... and if I have done one of my really long and sweaty ones, I like to kill a Bud Lite and lay face up in the grass on my hill and watch the clouds until Homer Simpson and Marge appear. I just love summer.

Thanks for the info! Hehehe. . .I think I can stay away from the beer/alcohol easier than the food. Eek!
I do well with doing aerobic exercise for that long and I try to make my workouts last at least an hour. Start off with some strength training first, and then aerobic exercise, either a class or a run (more like a quicker jog, hehehe).
*giggle* I haven't see Homer and Marge yet in the sky--I hope to see them one day!
That sounds really yummy. Perfect after a grueling workout! I'll try it out as soon as I can force myself to go grocery shopping!
this i could dig! i would sub the skim for fat free + add 2 raw eggs. delicious both ways.
Tuna ><((((*> the other white meat!
or add some yogurt to it
