Problem With Windows XP

Problem With Windows XP

I recently couldn't get into my computer, when it starts it goes to the black screen with the option of how to start windows:

Safe mode
Normal Mode

Last known Configuration that worked

I've tried all of them and none of them work.

When I restart it, it has: Running Boot from C:/Windows then shows the same screen.
I put a Windows XP cd into the CD-Rom but nothing happens, it still tries to boot from C:/Windows.

Any replies will be helpful, thank you for your time.

Thank you for the replies. I am now trying them and hoping that they work. I will notify after I try them and tell you the outcome.

Re: Problem With Windows XP

There are a few things I would check but if it looks to be software (Windows) related, I would do a "repair installation".  I've done this without losing data or programs.

First.... you can't boot to your CD.  You'll need to go into your PC's BIOS and set the boot order so that your CD/DVD-ROM boots before your hard drive.  Look here to see how to access your PC's BIOS interface.

Once booted to the XP CD, do not choose the first repair option that involves the Recovery Console.  This isn't what you want.  That requires file replacement and knowing what files to replace.

Choose the "Set Up Windows" option or similar and choose repair installation from that screen.  The rest happens on its own.

Re: Problem With Windows XP

hmm, try this,
run it in safe mode with command prompt,
if you get in,
run the command prompt,
start --> run, type in cmd or command
then just type in

"chkdsk C /f"
w.o quotes,
then it will ask if you want to run the chkdsk at start up,
type y then press enter,
now type shutdown -r
a window will come up saying that youve initiated a shutdown,
click on the command prompt screen again, and type exit, then hit enter, and just wait,
your computer will shutdown and restart, then just let it run, it will run a chkdsk, during this time, dont touch the computer, or abort anything, this should fix the problem,
if not, i will be looking for more information for you,

and one more thing, are you running windows service pack 3 (SP3) ?
