I'm the kinda grrl who does what she's told regarding MS service packs and installations.  I have Windows XP on my Dell laptop.  The yellow '!' icon appeared on the lower menu bar and I clicked to install whatever it was.  But this damn thing will not install!

I have re-started, tried installing again, and again (etc!) but I repeatedly get a 'this (XX) service pack has not been installed' message.  There is no error code or number to idenitfy or categorise the 'error'.

I've checked the MS service website (it had info on this service pack & why I should install it...) but after nearly becoming dizzy navigating my way round I couldn't find info on why this isn't installing.

Does anyone have any insight, info, words of wisdom to help me get over my annoyance & frustration of this and to solve the mystery of the non-installing Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1!!!

Thank you.

I really see no pressing reason why this update is totally necessary at this time.

If you don't want to be bothered with it, you can choose to not install it and in the window that pops up next, tell it to not offer it to you any more.  You can go into Automatic Updates later and tell it to offer declined updates again.

It's Web 2.0 ....baby!!!

Eye-wink

Actually, this is a pretty good question. Even the microsoft site is cloaked in ambiguity regarding the reasons for installing .net.

http://www.microsoft.com/net/basics.mspx

From my standpoint, you need to install it. .NET is royal pain in the behind when it comes to IT administration. The fact remains that you're probably going to have problems with third party software functionality if you don't install it.

From what I know, you need .NET and the Service pack (1.1) to get to the latest .Net 3.0.

When I run into this problem there are a few reasons behind it. More then likely you need the latest Windows installer.

Install that and see if it works. If you still have problems, try uninstalling the .NET 1 and then reinstalling through Windows update.

By the way, using the keywords "problems installing .net service pack" in Google brings your question to the third result. Ha Ha.

Apparently nobody knows the answer;-)

While I'm thinking of it...

I think the .NET 1 and service pack is a "critical" install so it should be an automatic download.

.NET 2 and .NET 3 are "optional" downloads and you may have to dig them out of the Microsoft update site.
