For the past two weeks I'm having trouble using tor. I keep getting errors that privoxy cant' access the port. If I do a system restore it will work. But once I restart, it's gone again. How can I check what other program is using that port?

Re: Privoxy Port trouble

Well I finally got around to fixing this. I forwarded the ports on the router for privoxy and another proggy, and everything is copacetic again. Not sure why I had to do that. Was working without issue for months--then wammo!

Re: Privoxy Port trouble
I tried that a while ago. Followed the steps on how to change my IP address on Firefox (I think I found instructions somewhere else online), but I totally failed. Firefox coudn't a single page when I changed the IP address. So I changed it back to default.

Might have been that I actually was trying to change this on my laptop rather than my desktop--the latter is connected to the router of my home network. Like I said, I'm almost computer illiterate!!

Jewels and Ashton,

Thanks!! I'll try messing with that. I'm semi-computer illiterate, so it might be a total adventure for me. Smiling

Re: Privoxy Port trouble
Jewels, I can't help you at all with your problem (I'm not very computer savy), but I wanted to as you (and Ashton):

1) How does Tor + Privoxy work?
2) Are they (together) an anonymizer that prevents commercial sites you visit from knowing **anything** about you?
3) Does it work for macs?
4) Is it complicated to set up and use?

Thanks, and I hope your problem is resolved very soon!!

Re: Privoxy Port trouble

Yes that's their purpose. There is a mac version also. It sets up automatically. And for the past year or so I've had no problem with it. Here's the site:

http://tor.eff.org/download.html.en

If you prefer opera, there is an opera version also at:

http://letwist.net/operator   (not sure if there's a mac version of that one)

Tor does slow down your browser considerably-so it's not useful for everyday browsing. I only use it when I need the anonymity.

Re: Privoxy Port trouble

Sleuthwannabe and Jewels

Follow this link (you're going to hate me - it's more for Linux configuration)

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Anonymity_with_Tor_and_Privoxy

If I had to guess, Jewel's firewall is getting in the way. Verify by turning the firewall(s) off.

Other possible causes:

Your workplace is already using a proxy, possibly even your home connection. I know where you live, Jewels, and trust me...they do crazy stuff up there. I'm willing to bet that the bandwidth sucks so much that they've thrown a Squid Proxy Server in the mix to help with page loads.

Try configuring Privoxy and Tor to use port 9050.

Try allowing the exception under Windows firewall on the port you are currently using as well as any other firewall settings.

Do an in depth scan for various spyware and trojans - preferably with AVG free because that utility catches more "nasties" than anything else I've seen on the market.

Please feel free to ask specific questions - I'll try to explain to the best of my ability.

Re: Privoxy Port trouble

I probably gave bad advise on the port that is listening (8118).

Don't change the listening port to 9050. Instead, try some of the suggestion in this link.

http://archives.seul.org/or/talk/Oct-2006/msg00100.html

This should do it.

Re: Privoxy Port trouble

I'm still mulling this over.

Jewels, it's very possible that one of your many Firefox extensions is using the local address (127.0.0.1) and the port 8118 for its purposes.

I just posed this question to a co-worker (kudos - Chase) and he says that he had this problem with Mozilla Thunderbird and the "Webmail 1.2.5" extension, which uses the port 8118 to grab Hotmail messages.

Would this apply?

Re: Privoxy Port trouble

How did I know you were gonna start on my extensions Ashton?? LOOOOOL

No it doesn't apply.

So I'm reading the link you posted. And I don't want to be a tor server-just a simple client. After reading that, I'm unsure....should I try changing localhost to my ip addy instead? And if so--should I change the port, or keep it at 8118?

Edit: I forgot to mention, I ran avg antivirus and antispy last night wondering if there was a problem. And only my goodies showed up, so that's not the issue.

Re: Privoxy Port trouble

Well I reinstalled and no dice. Got the same privoxy error as before.

Firefox shows this:

And OperaTor shows this:

Any ideas?

And thanks for the links Ashton--that was good stuff! Been going nuts with netstat trying to figure out the ports.

Re: Privoxy Port trouble

Well shields up says the port is closed. System info doesn't list it as open either. So why isn't privoxy working? I keep getting this error:

Guess I'll try reinstalling and see what happens

Re: Privoxy Port trouble

Any decent firewall log will show what ports have been used.

You can use this utility to check open ports.

http://grownupgeek.com/this-is-one-useful-tool-system-information-f

Click on the option that says "open ports". Really useful for determining if a Trojan is running in the background as well.

Here's another favorite site of mine (Shields Up) to scan your computer for open ports.

http://www.grc.com/intro.htm

If the problem persists I would consider reinstalling TOR. Just out of curiosity, have you opened an email concerning TOR lately?

The Stormworm (google it - it's bad) is targeting Tor users to send spam though the the Tor network - anonymously - which is actually a stroke of genius, if you follow that type of stuff.
