Private Message System on GUG

YOU HAVE PRIVATE GUG MAIL NOW!

Did anyone notice the private message system? It has replaced the GUG IM's and the contact tab (emails). I like this because unlike the old system when you sent a email it showed your email addy that you have listed on gug (not everyone liked that feature). This is so much nicer, you can still stay private here (no email addy shown) yet contact others with ease. Plus you can PM (private message) those that are NOT online - something you couldn't do with the old IM system.

How do you know you have a message? You don't have to keep checking your "my GuGMessages" you will see a message at the top of every screen and next to your GuGMessages will show how many messages you have in there (unread) see:

To send a PM to one of your geek friends (they will show on your drop down list - or once you have PMed them they are added to your drop down list) simply drop down the list and click on there name. The names are in alphabetical order (YAY). Once you click the name it will show up in the "To" box. How do you send a PM to someone that is not in your drop down box. Well simply type there name in the "To" area and you can send it that way (even if they are NOT online).

or you can go to a members profile and simply click the "send private GuGMessage" link

You can also change the settings for your Private messages. You need to go to your account page (your profile on gug) then click the "edit" tab and you will see this under the picture for your avi:

Things YOU CAN do in a PM:

You can add smile faces

You can add Pictures and Hyperlinks like you do on comments

You can set up your PM to email you when you have a new message! (see above)

Things you CANT do in a PM:

Now can you send the same message to two or more ppl (like a CC or a BCC) - no. SO if you want to send the same message - copy and paste baby!

Can non premium members use the PM system - sorry NO this is one of the perks of being a Premium member

so after a couple days of using the system, here are a couple thoughts:

1. i think i liked it better when my pm's were on top of the screen when i came to the homepage, rather than having to go to the inbox, i'm lazy like that. i don't get that many, so it wasn't a big deal to delete them all. but some people around here get more than others, so i can see how that may NOT be missed by some members, and i can respect that.

2. i do like that our email addy isn't shown/used though, that our mailbox is on the site...whew...

3. i wrote an email to someone, and noticed that it had been filtered! my sailor mouth language (s**t) had been filtered to "stuff"...boo! i can't curse at home, i watch my mouth and keep it PG-13 for the kids ALL day, and now i can't even put some of my favorite words in my GuG pm's....hmph...

4. i like that we can see if the message has been read or not....nice feature. 

overall...i'm happy with it

I also like this better--I don't like having my e-mail shown with the contact form. I'm also glad we can contact members who aren't online. Kudos, hubby!

 OK currious Hubby - if I go to send a email in the drop down box is "Contacts" if I click on the word "Contacts" it shows that in my "To" box.  So is that if you want to send a mass PM to all YOUR contacts?  I was going to do a test but OMG that would be a ton of PMs and then I'm sure they would all reply kindly - YIKES - I'm already on page 2 of PMs

 

Just an FYI, it no longer says "my inbox" so if you are looking for the same as Smartmom's pic, it has been changed to "my GUGmessages" Just Hubby's way of making us more confused.... as if we aren't capable of confusing ourselves!
