This is one of my first post in this forum, and I need some help with a new PC that I'm about to buy. I went to Ibuypower.com and custom made a computer, but I'm a little worried that the power supply that I have chosen will not be enough for the computer components, here are the specifications:

Processor: AMD Athlon™64 X2 6400+
Processor Cooling: CoolerMaster Liquid CPU Cooling Fan System Kit
Motherboard: MSI K9A2 CF-F AMD 790X CrossFire
Memory: 4096MB [1024MB X4] DDR2-800 (Corsair XMS2 Xtreme w/Heat Spreader)
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra
Hard Drive: 320 GB HARD DRIVE
CD/DVD Drive: 16x DVD-ROM + 52x32x52 CD-RW Combo Drive

It will also have a meter display.

The power supply I choose is '1000 Watt -- Ultra X3 Energy Efficient Modular Power Supply', I know that 1000 watts sounds like a lot but I'm still a little insecure.

If anyone can give me any advice on this, or help me out in anyway I would seriously appreciate it

If any more information is needed let me know and I'll post it here

Thank you to anyone who helps

Re: Power consumption

I’d think it’d be enough… and still have upgradability.  I see that your vid card requires 500W min.  And you know that you won’t ever be able to run two 8800 Ultras on your MSI CrossFire board, right?  Here are my specs for power reference:

  • Processor:  Core 2 Duo E6420 2.13 Ghz [Overclocked to 2.8]
  • Processor Cooling: ZALMAN CNPS9500
  • Motherboard:  GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS4 Rev. 2.0 LGA 775 Intel P35
  • Memory:  G.SKILL 4GB (4 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
  • Video Card:  GeForce 8800GTS
  • Sound Card:  Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty
  • Hard drives:  Two (2) WD 320 GB
  • CD/DVD Drive:  20X DVD+R SATA LightScribe DVD Burner

I’m running all that on FX600-GLN V2.2/EPS12V 600W Power Supply.  Hopes that helps.

Re: Power consumption

a 1000 watt PSU will run dual 8800's even the monster 720GB models but for peace of mind you would want a PSU with at least 4 +12  rails even for one card

Re: Power consumption

Four pin - twelve volt cable = good advise.

Multiple independent 12 volt rails PSU

A multiple independent 12 volt rails PSU has more than one 12 volt rail. Each of the 12 volt rails has its own separate circuitry. Each of the 12 volt power connectors on the PSU cables is hooked up to one of the 12 volt rails. Since this is merely a PC PSU rather than a "real" one, the manufacturers often don't feel obligated to tell you which connector is hooked to which rail.

One reason to have multiple separate 12 volt rails is to improve the load regulation and noise on the rail. When you connect an active load to a voltage rail you tend to end up with a noisy rail which jumps around a lot. It's not a nice flat voltage. It varies. The more active loads you hook to a rail the messier it gets. So building a PSU with independent 12 volt rails improves the "cleanness" of the power on each rail. Normally this is only done if you have some circuitry which is extremely picky about the quality of its voltage rails because separate rails cost more money than a single rail.

By the way, in case you're ever tempted to hook the independent 12 volt rails together (I've seen people on the Internet who think this is a good idea), don't do it. Your 12 volt rails may have different ideas about what voltage they should set their rails to. One may be quite a bit different than another. They're separate rails, after all, and they have their own circuitry which controls the voltage. They're bound to vary a bit. And if they're just a little different then you can draw lots of current when you connect them together because each of the output circuits try to force the voltage on the same wires to a different value. That causes either a nice orderly shutdown from the over-current protection or smoke and sparks. There are some power supplies which have switches which allow you to gang the rails together. Once you've set the switch properly it's okay to connect them.

Re: Power consumption

Thank you very much CM, this does help me. I did some research myself and yeah, I know I'm not going to be able to have two 8800 ultras in the same computer, I have decided to buy the computer I mentioned above with that exact specs.

Thank you again.

Re: Power consumption

It's a really good set-up.

If the idea is to spare a little expense, then I may have few suggestions...but you pretty much went top of the line everything.

And you gave me incentive to look over comparisons/benchmarks of what GPU's are available. I'll probably never game enough to warrant anything like the Ultra, but that seems to be the direction that games are going these days.

I dunno, maybe throw in a neon" back-lit" case fan on top of the order?

;-)
