Port Forwarding - Please Help!

Any help with my questions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to use a Peer-to-Peer program called uTorrent. Apparently to properly use any torrent client software you need to set up port forwarding on your router so there is a dedicated port for the program to use. Otherwise your connections slowly deteriorate and then no longer work with the program.

The program has very vague instructions for port forwarding. From what I understand though in order to properly set up port forwarding you need to have set your router for a static IP address.

I am nervous that if I set up the port forwarding for this program that it will somehow effect my network and the connections of the other 3 computers on my home network, and somehow negatively effect the internet connections of other computers. Will setting up port forwarding and setting up a static IP address effect the other 3 computers on my network? And do I create security issues by doing this?

How do you set up port forwarding through your router? And once this has been done, can it be undone or is it permanent?

I am a newbie, and although I an no stranger to simple networking I will get lost and confused when something gets explained in a over technical way when someone assumes I know more than I do. I posted on another forum and the help I got may as well been written in a foreign language. So please be patient. Any real help would be so greatly appreciated.

My home set up consists of 4 computers, all running Windows XP Pro SP2, all running through a Netgear MR814 Wireless Router which then goes to a high speed cable modem. My provider is Comcast.

Thanks!!!

Re: Port Forwarding - Please Help!

I just started using utorrent today but i haven't a clue how to portforward, also would my download speeds increase if I use the "random ports" option? And finally can anyone suggest some ranges that might increase the download speed. My broadband cable runs at 100Mb per second but I haven't a clue how fast utorrent should be with this speed.

I saw a number in the port forward slot,i think it was 39501,is that an automatic port range to suit my pc or is it default?

I changed it to 6881 only because that was the port range i was using for bittorent but i think i messed up big time.I don't want to mess up any further so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Port Forwarding - Please Help!

No problem.

Just keep in mind that there's an awful lot of torrents located on remote North Korean servers and such that contain trojans.

AVG free seems to be the best anti-virus program for catching it.

And animestrinity (edit -whoops), if you can figure out the brand of router that you're "hijacking", just look over the same link and see if the default passwords apply...or google for them.

Simply typing in 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 should bring you to the configuration page. It might work.

Re: Port Forwarding - Please Help!

Yeah, I had already done that... defaults didn't work... typical guessing didn't work... and not sure if I should try something else... I know if I asked them to let me open a port they'd freak thinking that would fry their computer (they're old and you can't reason with them)... so unless I can get around it and figure out the password to do it myself, I'm outta luck. If they could possibly understand what I'm doing, I know they'd not care... go figure, reasoning with people in their 60s when you're 20 doesn't work, because you automatically know nothing about anything in their eyes.

Re: Port Forwarding - Please Help!

Generally, you need to go to the router configuration page.

I was writing up instructions, but then found this web page which is entirely more detailed for configuring port forwarding on a Netgear MR814..

Hope it helps...

Re: Port Forwarding - Please Help!

I use utorrent and have port forwarding issues... dunno why... but I'm sharing someone elses internet, and doubt they'll give me the password to do what I need to do... not that I haven't tried to figure out what it might be myself...

Meh, I just deal with the slower downloading... averaging around 70kb/s... not toooo terrible... I mean... it could be worse... I could be using dial-up... *spooky music*

Well, I played around with mine, and attempted the static IP which didn't work on my computer for some reason...... or maybe it did... and it didn't have an effect on my network... then I undid it all I think... and still no effect, so I don't think it'll mess up anything personally. As for port forwarding, did you set up your router? Or did someone else? because you're going to need to know the log in info of the router to set up your ports.

Re: Port Forwarding - Please Help!

I use Utorrent and I don't have any issues that require I forward any ports, in fact I use random ports each time I start UTorrent.
