HELP! My PC has no sound......The speakers work, I can hear the static get louder as I turn up volume, but no music or anything comes thru. I went to Microsoft updates - checked driver updates, said it was fine.I tried re-installing the sound card CD, and it wouldnt load for some odd reason. When trying to reload the software I get an error message driver 4 this device are not iinstalled to reinstall click reinstall device. So....the driver is missing.
PC has no sound
Also, could be a video card issue. I have a video card I recently sent back to NVidia because it would frequently stop responding although I'd tried reseating it. Anyway, my PC would reset because my video card would become so overwhelmed with the action.. I don't know, just a suggestion.
Thanks Geeks for all the replies! I went to Microsoft.com and checked for driver updates, it said everything was current. I think THIS is the problem: My sound CD is 2000 Asound Ver 1.0, and it says its installed on my system but the driver is missing and windows cant upload it. I went to the Asound website and there are no online downloads avail for yr 2000. I was told by a computer repair shop that the driver must be outdated and no longer avail that is why my sound does not work. I guess its really time to upgrade...I have a PC custom built in 2000 - still using Windows 98.
Well, you have eliminated the speakers as a problem. Getting static and it increasing with volume is a good sign. The computer basically tells you that the drivers are not installed, so, we need to go from there. What kind of computer is it? Who is the manufacturer and what is the model number? Once you find that, for example if it was an HP Pavillion 7955 you would go to HP.com and enter the model number, in this case Pavillion 7955. Go to the drivers section and look for sound card drivers. Once installed it should play sound.
Go to Control Panel>Sounds and Audio and on theis window, make sure mute is not checked. Click the Advanced button in the Device Volume section and that will bring up your Play Control slider window. There should be no sliders at zero. Suspect volumes are Wave and PC Speaker. Make sure these are at least 50%. The only ones muted on my panel are SPDIF-In and CD Digital.
Sometimes I have issues when I use the webcam on MSN, so if that's the deal, I have a fix for you. Sometimes if you're updating your video/audio codecs on the device manager, or even if the update was unintentional, that could be the deal. I play a first person shooter, and occasionally, I'll have issues b/c the sound is switching between a full-console program and the desktop (explorer.exe). Just try and think about whatever happened in the middle of it working and not working, usually the suspect will come out.
