Password recovery?

Has anyone ever used or purchased a password recovery program? Is it possible to retrieve a password off from your computer - that was entered MONTHS ago?
I don't have a keylogger downloaded, I just stumbled across a site that claims to retrieve passwords. If, say - an "ex" used my computer to get on and off his myspace or his e-mail for a while do you think it is possible that it is saved somewhere on my computer?
I'm guessing this software is a hoax because if I've been diligent about erasing cookies, browsing history, form data, etc. Wouldn't that also delete a password?
Sorry for the long post, just curious and I guess a little sneaky too. Smiling
THANKS

Re: Password recovery?

So cain & Abel only restores passwords that were saved on the computer? This would not help if you are trying to get into your bf/gf's account because it is unlikely that they will have their passwords saved..and if it is saved there would be no need to use cain and abel in the first place. please let me know if there's a way around this. Thanks.

Re: Password recovery?

you could try cain & able. it works with my hotmail password (which came in handy once when i'd forgotten). basically if it's in your computer, cain will find it.

i can help you configure if you get lost Smiling

re: password recovery

slickchick, i have one you can try out and see if it will work for you. i was going to email you the url for the zip file to download, but your contact form is disabled on here, and your "send message" button on our myspace profile is also disabled. anyway, if you're interested, you can email me through my contact form on here, and i'll email you the url for the zip file. just be sure to put something in the subject that will alert me to who you are. Eye-wink

It could be on your hard drive

somewhere but not stored locally unless the browser is set to store passwords. And looking for deleted data on a hard drive is almost impossible even with special software. If it's overwritten, there's no chance. The CIA might be able to find it. Smiling

Re: It could be on your hard drive

not quite true. If it's been over-written, it's still recoverable; it's just that the magnetic platters will have to be physically removed from the drive and analyized by more senstive equipment. I believe it's an NSA standard to over-write deleted data with 7 layers of random noise to make it truely unrecoverable. Note, I use a utility that over-writes all deleted files and free space on my drives with 7 layers of random noise.

Re: It could be on your hard drive

I've taken a computer forensic course in the past and there are ways.

It involves knowing how to use complicated software (FTK - Google - there may still be a trial version) and then when a suspect file is found...using a hex editor to replace the over-written areas of the file...if it's not too badly over-written.

Our practice with discarded HDs is to drill hole through the platters for complete protection.

Preslie, if your offer still stands, you can send that utility to me!

Re: It could be on your hard drive

One more thing,

For those reading this that don't own or can afford an utility to overwrite data multiple times, getting into the habit of defragmenting your HD will assist the over-writing process.

Re: It could be on your hard drive

You know,

I'm occasionally of the opinion that another forum should be created for discussions on this stuff...

This really coincides with the recent theft of my notebook, and the fact that I was stupid (and lazy) enough to only password protect the login. I certainly have been giving this issue more thought...

I liked PGP while it was a trail version. Thanks for the bookmarks...the security site I knew, but had saved in the bookmarks on the laptop that developed a crack addiction.

Re: It could be on your hard drive

hm? this topic isn't "illegal", or inappropriate for anyone.

and if you have a secure system (I can't remember the proceedure's neccesary for booting off an encrypted drive, for some *nix's I think it's just a special bootloader; for windows and most *nix's I think it requires a Virtual Machine), you should only need to enter a password once (assuming that the password is secure)

I agree that topic is not illegal and for the sake of the 4th amendment, needs to be addressed.

You really just want to know if you can get your "ex's" password so you can go into his MySpace and wreak havoc?

RE:Password Recovery

Those programs only retrieve passwords stored locally,I don't think you can get passwords from info stored in your browser if you are flushing your cache on a regular basis
