Maybe I have missed something by not being up on the news, but is there something wrong with the tomatoes in the US or even just New York? The other day me and Sweetness went to go eat in Popeye's and they had a sign that said they would'nt be able to serve tomatoes in any of the orders because of something with the FDA.

Then yesterday, Sweetness brought me a sandwich from Blimpies and they didn't have tomatoes there either.

I want my tomatoes, Where are all the tomatoes?

Re: Ok, so What's up with the tomatoes?

I hate tomatoes.... not that I haven't tried to like them... I just think they're awful...

But I live in San Antonio....... so.... all the aforementioned food items that have possibly been contaminated, are pretty much a staple for all the restaurants here....

One more reason that Ramen is superior!

The tomato salmonella never really affected me because KY tomatos (the ones grown here not brought here) wern't affected and even though restaraunts couldn't get them you could get them at the farmers market, or in my case my mother in laws lol.

Re: Nope, peppers

Room for a garden is an absolute MUST when we move.  My backyard here is paved over with asphalt, so the best I can do here is a little bit in buckets on the roof.  Spinach, tomatoes, now peppers, I'm sick of having to give up my favorite foods because some employee in a plant can't be bothered to wash his damned hands after using the restroom.

I saw this on the news. I thought I heard them exclude red vine tomatoes.

I recently cut some of those up into a salad and it was (Dora's Voice) "Delicioso."

Re: Ok, so What's up with the tomatoes?

If you find Hot2na's post, there's a link for the FDA, with a list of the type of tomatoes recalled.  I think vine ripened were on the ok list, but it keeps changing, so I'd check.

Re: Ok, so What's up with the tomatoes?

They don't know that it's jalepenos, they aren't sure what it is yet.  People are still getting sick, yet not a single contaminated tomato has been found, so now they're investigating other ingredients commonly served with tomatoes, like cilantro, most peppers, including jalepenos, and green onions.

Re: Ok, so What's up with the tomatoes?

My mother-in-law was scared to buy tomatoes from anywhere, and we cook almost EVERYTHING with tomatoes... I reassured her once you cook them, any bacteria dies, which I think is generally true, depending on the temperature you cook with.

Well, I know that you can boil water to take away any toxins. I also hear that seasoning your food before you cook it can eliminate some of the bacteria.

Hot2na wrote:
salmonellosis outbreak in certain types of tomatoes.  a tomato "recall!"

CDC is collaborating with public health officials in many states, the Indian Health Service, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate an ongoing multi-state outbreak of human Salmonella serotype Saintpaul infections. An initial epidemiologic investigation comparing foods eaten by ill and well persons identified consumption of raw tomatoes as strongly linked to illness. Recently, many clusters of illnesses have been identified in several states among persons who ate at restaurants. These clusters led FDA to broaden the investigation to be sure that it encompasses food items that are commonly consumed with tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes, fresh hot chili peppers such as jalapeños, and fresh cilantro are the lead hypotheses. However, at this point in the investigation, the CDC  can neither directly implicate one of these ingredients as the single source, nor discard any as a possible source.

Since April, 991 persons infected with Salmonella Saintpaul with the same genetic fingerprint have been identified in 41 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada. Delaware  has had no reported cases;  Maryland  has reported  29;  New  Jersey 9  and  Pennsylvania  11  cases.
Arizona has  reported 47 cases  to  date.

Most persons infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12-72 hours after infection. Infection is usually diagnosed by culture of a stool sample. The illness usually lasts 4-7 days. Although most people recover without treatment, severe infections may occur. Infants, elderly persons, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely than others to develop severe illness. When severe infection occurs, Salmonella may spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and then to other body sites, and can cause death. In these severe cases, antibiotic treatment may be necessary.

At this time, FDA is advising U.S. consumers to limit their tomato consumption to those that are not the likely source of the  Salmonella  Saintpaul outbreak. These include cherry tomatoes; grape tomatoes; tomatoes sold with the vine still attached; tomatoes grown at home; and red plum, red Roma, and round red tomatoes from specific sources listed at: http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/tomatoes.html*. Consumers should be aware that raw tomatoes are often used in the preparation of fresh salsa, guacamole, and pico de gallo, are part of fillings for tortillas, and are used in many other dishes.
Consumers everywhere are advised to:

Refrigerate within 2 hours or discard cut, peeled, or cooked tomatoes.
Avoid purchasing bruised or damaged tomatoes and discard any that appear spoiled.
Thoroughly wash all tomatoes under running water.
Keep tomatoes that will be consumed raw separate from raw meats, raw seafood, and raw produce items.
Wash cutting boards, dishes, utensils, and counter tops with hot water and soap when switching between types of food products.
