I am: Not really paying attention

So I recently got rid of a worm/trojan on my computer and think I accidently infected the computer I am working on for a friend (getting rid of excess stupid programs etc)

the problem is, due to the "not a valid win 32" I cant load superantispyware or Ccleaner.

Is there a way to make sure the stuff I have on the cd that loaded fine on my comp didnt somehow get infected when I burned to a disc?

I did try to DL SASW directly at their house but had the same problem, then it was telling me about someother problem, but I couldnt read it as it appeared to be in Italian or french.

I didnt see anything in the HJT log that looked horribe, nor did anything in Belar of Fresh diagnose jump out at me. whatever is wrong with it is not being found by the older anti stuff that is on the computer.

Soimeone DID give me the option of going into command prompt and adding some new code on another forum but they never followed up....

oh yeah windows XP personal, both systems

If you havent already done this, please run HijackThis and copy and paste your entire report here into the thread. If you dont have or know where to get hijackthis, you can download it directly HERE

We will be able to help you more if we have more information as to the actual problem attacking your system Smiling

On my computer I have tried to DL AVG, but each version I have tried says it has a corrupt installation files.

I do have the AVG antispyware.

The command prompt tweak was to add "regsvr32 vbscript.dll"

On the other computer It has a lot of anti spyware stuff, but unfortunatly it is all oooooold.

They have adaware se, which apparently isnt updated anymore, though someone did send me a link to a new update, but I wasnt sure what to do with the file once I got it.

I DID try getting adaware 2007 but there I get the not a valid win 32 appl

that was probably just to check the system and not the disc. at the command prompt they may have planned on having you run the system file checker by typing in sfc /scan now

this explains what the sfc does:

System File Checker gives an administrator the ability to scan all protected files to verify their versions. If System File Checker discovers that a protected file has been overwritten, it retrieves the  correct version of the file from the cache folder (%Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache) or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file. System File Checker also checks and repopulates the cache folder. You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to run System File Checker. If the cache folder becomes damaged or unusable, you can use the sfc /scannow, the sfc /scanonce, or the sfc /scanboot commands to repair its contents.

so after you were able to get rid of the worm/trojan on your system, is it now fine?

There's usually a rightclick option you can do to a file that allows you to scan the file using your antivirus.  Be sure and use a reputable and newly updated AV scanner.  I like AVG.

You say you have some utilities on a CD but they won't install to your friend's PC?  Did you try downloading fresh versions off the Internet using her PC?  Also, you might try copying the install files from the CD to her desktop, making sure Read Only (rightclick Properties) box isn't checked.
