So I've been jogging alot lately and it's kinda bugging me that I can't keep track of the exact mileage I run.

I discovered this awesome gadget by Apple & Nike, and I've been thinking about buying it...

I know that some of you are also into fitness and I would like to hear your opinions people!!!!Do you have it? Is it any good?

Thx :-)

That's pretty cool!  They just keep coming up with stuff!  Anything that motivates and gets people moving is good.  However, I would never plug my ears with music while running outside unless I were on a track.  I like to zone out and listen to music while indoors on a skier or treadmill but never outside running.  I've had plenty of close calls with dogs and cars so I like to be able to hear what's going on around me.  Most of my dog encounters have been with little yappers and if I react at all to them it's a squirt in the face from my water bottle so they quit trying to bite my ankles and go back home, not get lost or run over.

Sometimes they ain't yappers and that's where you need as much warning as possible and all your senses.  If you are able to hear the sound of a large dog's toenails scraping the pavement and the jingle of his collar bearing down behind you, you have time to immediately stop, turn around, wave your arms, and scream bloody murder at the dog.  Twice that's been my only recourse and it worked.  It really freaked them out.  I guess there's eventually going to be the time that it's not going to work but in that case I'll be meat anyway.  Women should especially be alert because there is another type of dog to be on the alert for.

There are so many other interesting things besides music to hear while outside.  Your breathing, the birds, the wind, you can hear that real small loose gravel you are running over and that tells you to lighten your pace before you lose your footing.  My favorite sound is the dead quiet after it has snowed.  I guess I'm trying to say that you shouldn't isolate yourself when running outside.

To measure distance accurately, I use my bike's odometer or GPS to mark off miles so I know where the 3 mile turnaround is for an out and back.  I've also laid down small 1 mile markers in my neighborhood to use if I'm timing splits.  I just don't see how a sensor in a shoe can be that accurate at measuring distances not to mention the variables that come into play that determines how many calories any given person will burn in any given workout.

If you want valuable real-time feedback, a wireless HRM using a chest strap and wrist receiver would be better than a shoe sensor/calorie estimator.  I used a Polar for years.  A HRM used while running functions as a tachometer and allows you to keep your intensity where it should be without red-lining your heart.  You train better and smarter.  If you are doing interval training, it will show you when you have reached 90% of your max HR and it will show you when you have recovered so you can repeat the interval.  Any racer with a wall of trophies will tell you that the key to speed is interval training.  Also with a HRM, you can see your fitness improve as you cover the same distances at the same (or lesser) intensities in a shorter amount of time.

I do like gadgets and after a while with them, you tend to learn by feel what's happening by how you feel.  They teach you to be in tune with yourself.  These days, I rarely even put on my stopwatch - I just throw my shoes on and go.

Re: Nike + Ipod - Run

Wow Stevie thank you very much for your input. I get where you're coming from with the dogs and other potential dangers...Do you jog in the city, or cross-country? what happened to you sounds really scary. So far, I've never encountered something like this, and I really hope I won't since I live in a real large city. Also, my music is turned down really low because I just can't run without, I don't know, i need some kind of "power-song" in the background.

I had a hrm from polar for many years, but to be honest, i'm not really happy with it. Somehow the alarm thing constantly went off to tell me my hr was too high. It really bothered me and so eventually it ended up in the very back of my closet!

Also, you sound like you're doing this on a real pro level and me, well...I'm just doing it to stay fit and get out of the house a little.

Tuna...I looked up the Nike sports band, is it out already? I found something else very tempting...apparently they're planning workout apps for the iPhone. Can't wait for that Smiling

My running shoes are Mitsuno, i have to say they're the best I've ever had, the thing that bothers me about the Nikes is the weight, they're always too heavy and I can't handle that.

Re: Nike + Ipod - Run

I like light-weight shoes too.  A few ounces can make a lot of difference. And you are smart.. when you find a shoe that works, stick with it.  I've used Asics DS-GEL Trainers for 10 years or so - I think they weigh about 9oz.  They work well with my biomechanics.

Each year, I buy 2 or 3 pair at one time of the exact same model from Roadrunner or Holabird.  I always try get the previous year's model at a discount - sometimes half price.  I'm not tight, but I can't pass up getting 3 pr for the price of 2 and it's not necessary for me to have the current year's model.  I've even bought new shoes that were 3 years old.  Current year model DS Trainers usually go for $120.

So what do I do with 3 pair of the exact same ugly-ass running shoes?  I rotate them almost every run.  My shoes start to break down at about 200 miles if I use the same pair for consecutive runs.  If I rotate them so each pair has a day or two of rest, I can squeeze the life of a single pair to 400-500 miles.  I do 6 miles 4-5 times a week - that comes to 1200 miles a year so that's why I buy 3 pair at one time.

As soon as I open the boxes, I number them on the top (1,2,& 3) with a permanent marker so I can keep track of whose mates are whose and which one is next in the rotation.  Sounds like a lot of trouble and when I think about it like this, it is absolutely anal as hell. But a good running shoe's cushion does break down quickly and my 46-year-old frame needs all the cushion it can get.

Oh.. and I've got a unique spreadsheet (Excel) that tracks cumulative mileage (weekly, monthly, yearly).  Email me if you think you would be interested.  It does bicycle too, but I can take that part out.

Re: Nike + Ipod - Run

Wow. you're an organized kind of gal Smiling

I must say, I'm way less strict about my shoes and frankly, till mine are all worn out, it's gonna take aaaaages I'm sure. Kudos to you though and I'm convinced that your 46-year-old frame looks more like a 22-year-old frame!

Thank you for your offer bout the spreadsheet, that sounds awesome. Did you create it yourself? Right now I can't really use it since I have no way of keeping track of the miles I run (I'm still lacking the proper system..GPS, nike run, nike wristband, whatever) but I'm sure that's gonna change very, very soon.

haha!  The screaming at the dog comment made you think I'm a girl.  No, I'm a guy that screams at dogs.  :)  I'm not really organized - I get in trouble all the time when my wife trips over piles of shoes.  I'm always dropping a pair in the trash just to keep th eherd down.

When ran in town, I had to deal with cars (drivers) and dogs.  Where I live now, the only animals I see when I run are horses and roadkill if I venture out of my subdivision.  My subdivision is in the country surrounded by horse farms and I have a country road where I can cruise nonstop on foot at 7:45-8 minute miles.

There are a couple of mean ones I see on my bike route and they are seriously after my a**.  Talk about maxing your heart rate.

You're forgiven for thinking I'm a girl.  Eye-wink

Re: Nike + Ipod - Run

Argh! Sorry!! *major embarassment*

Actually no, it wasn't the screaming at dogs thing...it was the being soo organized with the shoes thing which I'm not used to with you guys...My man leaves his stuff scattered all over the place too, and yes, he gets yelled at aswell Smiling

It also was your pink pulsating heart...j/k. I had a quick glance at your profile and saw your pic of a woman, silly me, thought it was you, and it's your beautiful wife instead..Really, I'm sorry, I hope I didn't damage your male ego or sth. lol

Back to the dog thing- It hasn't happened to me (yet) but now you sure got me scared. I'll keep you posted when I'll have to scream at one for the first time Eye-wink

That's OK.. I guess seeing that picture being there would be misleading.  I would put mine there, but I'm not nearly that pretty.  The way I have it figured, if people see her there then they might think I'm an Adonis.  I'm sure she gets this all the time, "Why on earth are you with HIM??"

Sadly, my ugly mug is posted somewhere in here.

Re: Nike + Ipod - Run

yes, love them. although my treadmill keeps track and such, i really wanted them just to have. i know....silly. i won't wear them outside, don't want to get them dirty. for outside running, i prefer the nike shox nz running shoe or puma trailfox II xcr. both excellent for running on and off pavement, and both recommended by my personal trainer. - to keep track of time, speed, distance, and calories try the new sportband. here is the g2 on it:  nike sportband
