This year unlike the year before, is looking somewhat promising as far as music goes, but may also be a disastrous year with many artist most likely trying to be too "relevant". Here are a couple albums that I'am looking forward to, feel free to post any that you are anticipating, or have already been released.
U2 will be releasing a new album which promises to be a more memorable album then 2004's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb". The worrying part about this new album is that they intend to "push the envelope" and have a few songs that get rid of their "U2 clears the dance floor" image, which does make me think of how they "cut down the Joshua tree" with "Zooropa" and "Pop". They should just focus on making music that sounds good, not whether or not teenies can bump uglies to it.
The Killers will also be releasing a follow up to their disappointing 2006 offering "Sam's Town", an album in which even the best songs had the occasional but glaring poor lyrical choice. Brandon Flowers was also quoted that Sam's Town would be "one of the best albums of the past twenty years," which like his problems with having to put whats on paper into a song no matter how much it will ruin it, makes me not doubt his talent as a musician but only his judgment as one, which is a problem that has destroyed the careers of many promising people in every genre. This next album can go either way, and I definitely see it as their make or break album. They have been quoted as wanting to go back to basics, but I do want to know what they mean by that. Also this new album Is being produced by Stuart Price, and I mean no disrespect to the man but he's a little "Pop" for my taste. I think they may want to steer clear of anything that can give them the "teenyboper Band" image, that comes from trying to be too mass market and has held back their music from the beginning.
An album that is currently out and has actually proven itself to be a well executed release is R.E.M.'s "Accelerate" which gets better once you finally figure out what Micheal Stipe is actually saying. This newest release is being dubbed some of the best work of R.E.M.'s career, its actually somewhat surprising that this album is being held in such high acclaim seeing as it was hardly anticipated by anyone, most likely because it isn't a very "current industry standard" album. It really shows that when you make music you shouldn't care if it fits in with todays music industry or if you're peer group likes it (talking to you EMO kids) , just play the music of you're soul, If its good people will listen even if its only a few.
Two more bands that I'm not particularly a fan of that are coming out with new albums this year are Coldplay and Oasis, and I ask any fans of either of these bands to please give their thoughts on these upcoming releases. Also if you know of any others that are coming out this year in any genre, Indie or mass market please feel free to post them here.
Even if its just you and you're garage band selling music on iTunes, or should that be in a different thread?.
