I need to connect two computers in my home. I have no hub. I have no router. But I have the crossover cable to connect the two computers directly.

There is only one DSL outlet in my home and both computers (running xp home) need access to the internet. (at the same time if possible)

How do I accomplish this? Thanks so much for the help!

Re: Network Two Computers

Only *easy* way is to get a router. Spend a little bit of cash can save you hours on end. But if you need help here is a small guide.
==============================

Be sure that both computers are logged in to Windows.

Connect each end of the cat5 crossover cables in to the network cards of each computer.

Bootup both computers and sign them both on to Windows.

In order for both PC's to be able to communicate together, the Ethernet adapters will need to be configured with a static IP address and a common Subnet mask. As an example, assign one PC an IP address of 192.198.0.1 and assign the second PC an IP address of 192.198.0.2. Both machines should use the Subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Here's how to configure your Network Card: Go to Start>> Control Panel>> Network Connections>> Right click your Local Area Connection and select Properties. Scroll the list for the entry titled: Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click the entry and select Properties. Under the General tab, tick the box titled: Use the following IP address. Enter the IP address and Subnet mask that you would like to use. Repeat the steps above for the second computer system.

Be sure that both PC's have a common workgroup name of 15 characters or less. Here's how: Go to Start>> Control Panel>>System. Select the Computer Name tab. Click the Change button. Change the Workgroup name. Repeat these instructions on the second computer ensuring that both computers are named exactly the same.

Reboot both computer systems.

Next, open a command prompt on one of the computers by going to Start>>Run. Type in: command [Enter] or click OK.

Type: ping 192.198.0.2 (if you are using the computer assigned with 192.198.0.01) press Enter.

Five replies to your ping should be indicated.

If you need any help, just reply back here, I can help you with any of your needs.

Get yourself a Linksys Router! They are great, cheap and easy to configure.

Help connecting two computers

Can someone help me with a computer issue. Its relly important.
I want to connect two computers in my home. I dont have a router and I dont have a hub. I do have a crossover cable to connect the computers.

I use DSL and only have one DSL outlet in my home.
Both computers use windows xp.
Is this possible for me to do this? How can I accomplish this without a router or hub?
Please help. Sorry if this isnt in the right place.

ADD:
or is there a way for both computers to share the DSL connection without connecting the two computers together. (such as a splitter jack or something. I do NOT want to get a hub or router)

also both computers have a ethernet card, a nic, and a modem.
Please give me good instructions. I know some but not enough to get this going.
THank you so much!

Re: Help connecting two computers

There are convoluted, complicated, problem-prone ways to do this.. but why not just plug-in a $39 router and do it the easy way? What are you trying to avoid? It might be easier to solve that issue than to do this without a router.

Re: Help connecting two computers

You know, I've been sitting here trying to figure answering this, but there is so much to it, I was thinking the same thing....which is what I did in my home, I just bought the router and it wasn't expensive at all. And it was easy to hook up.

The networking wizard on your computer will walk you through the steps. But......pay attention. I couldn't pay attention long enough, that's why I just got the router. (Linksys at that time). I'm sorry.

EDITED TO ADD:  Don't give up though, someone smart might come along yet and be able to help you.

Re: Help connecting two computers

Just trying to save money. LOL

Well, what kind of a router is only $39?
and when I get the router can someone tell me how to do this? Sorry for all the questions.

Basically once I have the router, how do I set it all up??
I only have one DSL outlet.

ADD: I dont mind alot of detailed instructions, if i can do this without a router, if someone doesnt mind telling me all the instructions. I tried to look on google all day and just went areound and around in circles.

thanks!

i can see doing one of two things:

  1. when you purchase the router, ask the tech help at the store, give them your goal end result, and they should be able to give you what you need.
  2. once you are home and have the router, and anything else that was needed, you come back here to this particular thread you started and you will get support here.

I can tell you with the one I pointed to above (since I have that in exact one in my house up north) you plug it in pull out the CD that comes with it and it walks you though really really easy.  If my mom who is in her mid 60's can do it (very computer illiterate) then I'm sure you will have no issues.  If you should it has a 1-800 # on it that they will be more then happy to go step by step with you. Re: Help connecting two computers

Well you should have a modem that the DSL line goes from the phone jack into a modem and then into into your computer.  Check on the back to make sure that you don't already have a area to plug in two cat5 lines (most don't but some do).  They do make spliters for ethernet cat5 lines but they can get costly for a good one.  Your much better (and cheaper) to get a router.  Here is a good one for 39.99 and currently free shipping and handling

LINKSYS WRT54G IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless-G Broadband Router - Retail

that is a great price and it has 4 cat5 ethernet cable plugs in it so you can hook up all 4 or go wireless.

Re: Help connecting two computers

Thanks for the information. If I must buy a router I will get that one you recommended.
But if there is any way that I can do this another way (even if complicated) that would be so much more convienant for me.

Long story but life would be much easier if I could get this done by tomorrow and without connecting a router or hub. (i did find a hub in the attic, but not sure if it works or if it will help. the hub says "belkin usb 4-port hub" and it has 4 ports and a port that says "root port"

So if i have to go get the router I will, BUT it would be so much easier and educational to hook it up somehow with the crossover cable or running two lines from a splitter? Any help is suggested.

Re: Network Two Computers

You can probably use a splitter jack at the output of the DSL connection and run off a couple of straight-throughs from it. I don't know what the quality of the signal will be for both, though. You can give it a whirl Smile Is there a particular reason you don't want to get a hub?

Thats what I was hoping to be able to do. That would be most convienant for me.
I tried a splitter jack and it wouldnt work. I thought maybe I needed a special kind of splitter instead of the usual one I use for sharing phone lines.

So is there any other possibility?? I do have two 50 foot phone lines.

No just saving money. I looked in the attic and found a hub in a computer box but i dont know if it would help. And i dont know how to hook it up. Here is what the hub says "Belkin usb 4-port hub" it has 4 usb ports and a port called "root port"

I am lost! I have no clue how to use this hub.
So the most convienant way would be the two lines. Thanks for any more input!

What you have is a USB hub. This allows you to use multiple USB devices at the same time. Not what you need here. You will need a router or a "switch". Least expensive and easiest way is to get a 10/100Mbps ethernet switch... plug the line from your DSL modem into the input and the computers can plug into the outputs. No software needed. Just plug in.

Here's a network switch:

You can also use a router like the LinkSys already mentioned, but sometimes you have to hold your mouth right (reset and pray) if your DSL service is buggy. You don't have to be wireless to use one of these - plugs are in the back. Advantage here is you are set with wireless if you ever get a notebook computer. Here is a LinkSys home router:

To network the computers connected by a switch or router you will want to run Windows Network Setup Wizard (in Network Connections) and follow the instructions. You'll need a floppy or a USB memory stick.

A guy recently told me THIS is a wonderful alternative to Windows Network Setup Wizard.

You cannot split a CAT5/6 cable and expect to be able to network two computers easily. You also cannot use a splitter to share an Internet connection - you need a router or a switch.

Re: Network Two Computers

Hey change that.  Get a router and not a switch.  I forgot.. a desktop switch won't work unless one computer has 2 network cards.  That computer must hook to the Internet using one NIC and another computer connects to teh other NIC.  Not a good way to do it.

So get a LinkSys wireless and be done with it.  Much simpler  Smiling

Both computers have a regular nic and also a ethernet card.

Does that qualify as two nics?

Im going to get a router and follow your instructions. Thanks again!

No you would need to have two in one  computer plus I can tell you that you would still probably have issues.  Really router is the only way to go.

Re: Network Two Computers

Thanks! I do plan to go with the router as Stevie explained. Im going to get it this evening.

But now Im curious about the nics part he mentioned.

Maybe I need to re-word it differently. Both computers have 2 cards inside. (one is a regular nic and one is a ethernet card)

So I think it may qualify as two nics, right?

Thanks!

Re: Network Two Computers

Yeah.. sorry about the acronym.  A NIC is short for Network Interface Card.  Also known as an Ethernet card.  If a RJ45 sized plug fits into it and snaps in, it's a network card.  The RJ45 sized plug is similar to but a bit larger than a phone plug.

A similar jack accomodates a phone line from the wall and is smaller.  If you have this card, it's a modem used for dial up.  It's very possible to have both installed in teh same computer.

NIC (networking interface card):
