It sounds like you're using the recovery disk that came with the computer.
I've always had the actual XP CD laying around so I'm used to more options. I may not be the one to talk about using a recovery CD.
If these are the only options that you're given, then what might be happening is that the CD sees that a recovery partition is present but then encounters an error while trying to load it.
If the machine was completed reformatted by using another utility (Windows 98 F-disk, maybe G-Parted stand alone utility) then the recovery disk may have a chance to load XP.
Anyone else?

I talked with someone that stated that their recovery disk for a toshiba came with an option that states:
Out of the box.
and will give you more formatting options. Hope it helps.

Thomas,
If you are trying to do a total reformat, then don't select "R". My guess is that the error is caused by not finding the recovery partition.
It sounds like you're trying to do a clean install (???) and there should be other options.

i am trying to do a clean install. the only other option i get is press Q to quit and boot from the hard drive ( i dont want to do that)
After asking around,
The best thing for you to do is to probably download an independent formating utility, like G parted.

This is a Linux based utility that will independently boot from cd and format your hard drive. After that you can utilize the recovery disk to place XP on the machine.
Be sure to download and copy to a cd and make sure it's an .ISO.
