Ok, I wasn't exactly sure where to post this but I need help! I will try to explain my situation as best I can. A couple of weeks ago, my computer basically died and since I have a warranty at Best Buy, I took it to the Geek Squad. it turns out my hard drive was DONE. They sent it out to have the hard drive replaced and then had me bring in my recovery disk to reboot. I finally have my computer back and I have been reinstalling all of the programs that I had on it before. Everything has been working great BUT I have been having a problem with one thing...my digital camera and/or it's software. I have a Canon Powershot SD800 IS Digital Elph and it comes with a software cd called a solution disk that you must (at least i *think* you must)install in order to transfer the pictures onto the computer. I had absolutely no problem with anything before my hard drive went bad. The camera itself seems to be working fine as far as taking pictures but for some reason, the pictures will not download onto my computer anymore. When you connect the camera to the computer, the computer is SUPPOSED to recognize the camera and you will see a pop up asking what action you would like to take. At the same time, the camera is supposed to recognize that it is plugged up to the computer, and on it's screen, it will ask you if you want to transfer all of the new images. The camera uses the installed software to transfer the photos. Ever since I got my computer back and reinstalled the software, not only does nothing show up on the computer, but the screen on the camera goes black as well (however as soon as I pull the cord out of the camera, its screen comes up again). I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software five times now and I still get the same result. I have also tried plugging the camera up to the computer with no software installed. I get nothing. I'm not sure if this makes a difference but the software includes the following for Windows: ZoomBrowser EX 5.6, PhotoStitch 3.1, Camera TWAIN Driver 6.6, Camera WIA Driver 6.4, and EOS Utility 1.0. I am sorry for such a lengthy post but I really do NOT want to take my camera back to Best Buy for them to send it out for a few weeks just to tell me what is wrong with it (especially if it is something simple to fix). I would GREATLY appreciate any advice! Thank you!
need help with camera software! (i think)
Sometimes Windows can be a little picky in which way drivers and software and hardware is installed.
Normally, for devices like cameras that aren't supported by Plug and Play in XP you will first need to install the driver, then the support software, and then (and only then) plug the hardware in. Doing it out of order can result in the Wizard loading up multiple times, multiple copies of drivers and programs and then "pfffft" computer brain fart
You may have to remove the driver(s) and Program and disconnect the Camera and reinstall the driver first, then the Program, then hook the Camera up
Another possibility is USB priority. If the USB devices were not put back into the previous order of priority then a USB Printer or USB Scanner might fight with a USB Camera "down the rung"
Lastly, as weird as it seems, some Cameras cannot link to the Computer if there is no batteries installed in it or the battery pack is empty or low as they use their battery power to link up with the computer. Using Cheap AAA batteries in the DXG type cameras going around barely makes them work (if they even do) and they definitely won't provide enough juice for the sync procedure with a computer (actually had a lady complaining her camera won't work with the $1 Panasonic batteries I sold her, but as soon as she shelled out $7 for the energizer-MAX it started working...lol)
Actually you should check your batteries of your camera first before doing all the un-installing and reinstalling as I have a DVD Camera that doesn't work for downloading to the computer if it's battery pack is dead so I am kinda stuck on that maybe the cause of your camera being uncooprative...especially if the Screen is going black on your camera (as in it may be powering down cause power is low/gone)
i apologize in advance if you've already tried this...
if you've been installing the software directly from the cd, try clicking "start", then "control panel", then "scanners and cameras". under "imaging tasks", click "add an imaging device". when the wizard opens, click "next", then "have disk". you'll be prompted to insert the cd, and the wizard will install your software for you. (i had the same problem with a nikon, and this fixed it.)
This is the link to download the latest software and drivers for your camera, if the pics can't be downloaded direct from camera there are other fixes namely a digital card reader instead of using the camera to download pics into the computer (google digital card reader they range in price from 4$ to 30$)
