When I plug in my big plug & play desktop monitor to my laptop, it tries to make the desktop monitor an extension of the laptop screen as opposed to the desktop being the primary screen. I can't figure out which setting to change to make the big monitor the primary display. Capische? Have spent last two hours screwing around with it.

Go to your Display Settings. You should see 2 displays. One will be a "1" and the other a "2".
Click on each one. You'll see the option below one of the screens that says "Extend the desktop onto this monitor". Un-check that box. There is also an "Advanced Settings" button that should take you to some other settings in regards to each display. In there you can identify which monitor is number 1, 2, etc and even switch them around (making either the primary display).
Not sure what operating system / display driver this is in regards to but the options mentioned should be available in XP and Vista.
