Hey all,

I just found this great site containing a free mileage log generator. If you are taking a mileage expense deduction on your tax return (schedule C or otherwise) you may like this. If you don't keep a log, forgot to or if you just need one for backup in case you get audited this tool comes in handy. It saved me so I thought I'd pass it along to all of you in case you may need it or know someone in a jam. The site is:

www.mileagepal.com

Hope this helps!

Regards,
Icabod

Re: Mileage Log Help

Hi Icabod,

Very interesting name and a very interesting site you posted. I went to mileagepal.com and input some mileage (2,000) and the lowest (2) and the highest (15) mileage for any given day and then input how many days to split the mileage in to. Brought the findings up in a spreadsheet.

I was a little disappointed to see that it took the 360 days I gave it and numbered my spreadsheet from 1 to 360 and put random numbers beside each day (a number from 1 - 360). Reason I was disappointed, was that mileage logs really need to have days of the week (the date), the amount of miles driven and the destination you drove to. Some logs will have you also input the reason, i.e, client meeting, pick up supplies for client, etc.

It looks great, but since I have to show all this information for each client and destination, it probably won't work for me. If my clients mileage looks different on this log, I'm afraid IRS probably wouldn't accept it. Course a person could make adjustments on the spreadsheet.

But it can give you a head start or rather, maybe incentive to get that mileage log completed.

For myself, I have to keep a calendar and each day (or week if it's been a long week) I go over it to be sure I have corrected the calendar just in case I had to make a run for supplies for a client, or, if there was a cancellation with a client.

My starting point is always my home office.

Glad you posted that Icabod as I'd not seen it yet. I went back to the site and used the Advanced Feature where I could input each day of the week I work, which is Monday through Saturday and the holidays I took off last year (Christmas Day was the only day I took off).

This took me to a nice page with the whole calendar year and I then selected See Results. And it wouldn't take me there. Kept saying:

Not Found

The requested URL /page1.php was not found on this server.

I was really curious to see what would happen next. Possibly I did something wrong so I'll try it again later.

Nice find!

Lynn
