I'm a metal head from back in the day. In high school I mostly listened to metal. The harder the better. Master Of Puppets is about close to perfect as a metal album can get. It's heavy, dark and twisted. Orion is one of the best metal songs ever recorded and it doesn't even have lyrics. Cliff Burton was a genius. Disposable heroes is angry and fast. My Junior year I wrote a paper with excerpts from Welcome Home Sanitarium that should have landed me in the counselors office but some how it didn't. When I would skate this album blared in my mind as I tried to push my body and skill level past the breaking point. To this day I still use that trick. Right before trying to do something on my board that might get me hurt I play some crazy metal in my head to get me pumped up enough to not care about getting hurt.

So what's your favorite album? What will you listen to regardless of trends in music? I won't get mad if it's not metal.

I'll check it out. As long as they don't play the new stuff I'm down.

A while back i saw this duet performing Metallica's Orion during an MTV commercial. Its a really cool interpretation.

I've been scooping up old Anthrax lately. Oh and also Suicidal Tendencies. Old Anthrax is so amazing.

Anthrax is only Anthrax with Joey Belladonna. I also loved Suicidal Tendencies, D.R.I., Prong, etc. Ok, I guess this indie rock chick used to like a little metal in her days.

Re: Metallica's Master Of Puppets is the best metal album ever.

I remember one Prong song they'd play on Headbanger's Ball...

Suicidal Tendencies is awesome! They really had some good stuff, a little different than some of the rest out there. I liked "The Art of Rebellion", "Lights Camera Revolution", and the first self-titled stuff the best...

And now the bassist is w/ Metallica, Robert Trujillo. So bringing it back to the thread's original topic of Metallica all full-circle like.

I hadn't thought of Robert Trujillo. This did have an interesting turn. The first self titled is my favorite. I started my work day with that album today.

I really like metallica but I wouldn't say any of their albums are the best ever by a long way. They're good but they are very over rated imo.

Well said. I still listen to this album as old as it is. I can't say that about to many other cd's.

I listen to tons of old stuff. And I rotate thru all Metallica's in my vehicle 2 cds at a time. Along with everything from Zeppelin and Sabbath to the newest rock/metal that came out last week.

Although I love Master of Puppets, and it was the first Metallica I got (on cassette for my 11th birthday), I have to say that ...And Justice For All is my favorite. It might be one of my favorite albums of all time. I like that its faster than Master of Puppets and the double bass is just amazing!!

Re: Metallica's Master Of Puppets is the best metal album ever.

Metallica with TSO is by far some of my favorite stuff metallica has ever done. Purely because it is SO different, and SO non-mainstream and SO GOOD!

As for their own albums, And Justice For All is my personal fave. Granted, it's probably because Im not quite as old as some of you Eye-wink and I was VERY young when Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets came out (sorry, not-so-subtle jab at smartmom and devil, hehe) Harvester of Sorrow is still one of my top 20 favorite metal/rock songs.

From that general era, other than adoring aerosmith, I have nothing but love for Geoff Tate and Queensryche. His vocal range is staggering and amazing. I cant personally think of anyone currently who can begin to compare, vocally.

I should start an I <3 Queensryche Cult Laughing out loud

Some how I can see you riding your board lisening to Metallica.  My little brother use to love Metallica - I was the sister that would beat on his door "Turn that crap off".  OK no secret that I'm a Christmas freak (love it) and I do have a Metallica Christmas song and well it's one of my favorites (they were with Trans Siberian Orchestra).

Re: Metallica's Master Of Puppets is the best metal album ever.

Picking ANY Metallica album as the best ever is a good decision in my book. Yes, I even like the new stuff. I don't know if I'd pick "Puppets" over "Justice", but then again I couldn't live without any of them. the Black album will always have a special place in my evil heart because it really introduced to me heavier music than what I was listening to at the time. Which was basically whatever Rock the radio was playing. You still don't find a lot of Metal on the radio where I live. And "Nothing Else Matters" was my wedding song. So even when they slow down, Metallica is good.

I don't pay much attention to music trends, but then again I don't actively search for new or unknown acts, so I guess you could say I sorta depend on the trends to bring new music to me. I'm a metal-head first, I like my music with some teeth and spine. I like most of all the differing rock genres. I can't listen to any carbon-copy nonsense Pop or R&B. I'm not too fond of country (except for a handful of songs, plus I like some folky stuff) and Rap hasn't been any good in about a decade (Again, a good song here or there will surprise you).

To answer your other question, I will always listen to what I like. End of story there. And I'll always like Metallica no matter how much the cool kids hate them for coming down on Napster. And however much the old-school fans can't understand that they cut their hair. (Hey, I didn't want to cut mine either, but nature dictated that it was a good idea.)

Wow, P, feels like you wrote this post just to get a response out of me! It worked, so good job!

2)

Like you said, the Orchestra music was nothing but amazing. A great example of how Metallica isn't afraid to take some risks and make the music they think will be good.

And hey, I'm kinda old now, but I was only in jr. high when the Black Album came out! I was too young for the older stuff, I had to go back and discover it as a high school kid!

Yeah, it's easy and hard to be mad at them all at the same time over Napster but it is there actual product they are protecting, no matter how rich they are.

The hair thing was shocking but it brought them up with the times. Long haired metal bands seem dated now. I guess because I'm into so many Metalcore bands that are younger guys. I mean, I cut my mullet off when it was time and I'm glad they did too.

Although irritating, I could see both sides of the Napster issue, but I have to admit, it did make Lars look a tad, whiny, shall we say?  Cutting their hair didn't phase me one bit.  However, when Al Gore threw that global concert a few months back, I caught them in an interview, and it threw me for a loop when one of them said "Yeah, we're touring with all 9 Metallikids this time around.  Metallica's all about family," and he MEANT it.  *shudder*  I don't know if that means they've wussed out, or if it just means I'm old.

"How do you know I'm mad?" asked Alice.
"You must be", said the cat, "Or you wouldn't have come here"
