memory upgrade question

hi im new to this and great site by the way heres my question,
i have a dell inspiron 1000 i want to upgrade my 256 mem dell says it will only take another 256 its this true or can i get a 512 card and it will read it and be fine don't wanna sound like a NEW B but if i don't ask i'll waste time, cashand with my luck prob blow up this machine and myself any help for the new kid thanx alot

If the max is 512mb then it wont matter if you get another 256mb or replace the one you have with a 512mb, it will only read up to 512mb... sorry Sad

I did also check the DELL site and it does state the max memory is 512mb.. 2 slots...

The good news is a 256mb card from dell is only $28.99... So at least its cheap Smiling

I looked at a couple of sites including crucial, and yes, the max ram is 512.  The more memory the better, but 512mb with XP isn't too bad.

so do they make a 512 upgrade for it and if so would it register 768?
