Mac remote password, activity monitor

Mac remote password, activity monitor

Ok, put me in the category of paranoid if you'd like, but I need your geeky advice with my mac. Sticking out tongue

I have this G4 PowerMac desktop at home which I have been using a lot lately since my laptop was at the apple repair shop. This desktop is the computer that is hooked up to a wireless router (network access is not password protected, since don't know how to set it up), a vonage phone connection, a cable modem thingy, and other miscellaneous stuff such as printers, fax, floppy drive (yes, I still have that, though hardly use it), etc.

Anyway, as of late, it had been kinda slow, so yesterday I went through it with spring cleaning, and before then I put it through techtool pro. I erased most cookies and caches, but left some that were a little weird looking (I opened all of them with text edit before sending to the trash, to see what they said). So that aroused my suspicion.

Here's the paranoid part: Through my BF's bro does not live here with us, he does have access to the house, and has been known to use my computers whenever he pleases. And we're not speaking to each other (he's a jerk, and supposedly I'm a snob) so there is reason to mistrust him. I don't know he'd be capable of doing something like installing anything on my computer when I'm not around, but you never know. He might be a jerk, but I just don't know if he's that bad of a person...but once again, you never know....

So I guess my question is, are there any remote spying and password stealing programs, for the mac? If there are, could anyone tell me how to find them, if any do exist, on my computer? What to look for? etc? Thanks a bunch.

(I know...I'm being paranoid....and I should set up my computers to require password  when starting and awakening in the first place...I actually did once, but that seemed so rude and hostile that I decide to take it out..Anyway, thanks in advance for your help).

Thanks once again Ashton!! I'll take a look at the spectorsoft, et al. Might be just what I need. Sticking out tongue

Re: Mac remote password, activity monitor

Thanks for the reply Ashton.

About the process library in the thread you mentioned, unfortunately that seems to be a windows-only program, and I'm not sure how to use the control alt delete thing since this is a mac. Sad These are the times I wish I had a PC... Yell

And about the guest account....I know...practical advice, and believe me I want to. But once again, it seems too hostile (this family's motto is "what's yours is mine, and what's mine is yours;" except the bro has changed the latter part to "what's mine **might** be yours if I'm feeling generous or if you beg").

we do have a "password protected" download option for the computer, but I think BF has given the password to others since it's one of his two passwords that he uses for other things, and he's the "I have nothing to hide" type.

In any case, thanks again for your reply.

Re: Mac remote password, activity monitor

To bring a keylogger out of hiding there is a key combination. The person installing can set up a personal key combination - in which case, you're SOL.

However, they may have skipped that step and left the default "hotkeys" in place.

Since there are so few Macintosh keyloggers, most of them being hardware based and thats certainly noticeable, it's just a matter of researching which software keyloggers support the Macintosh OS platform.

Spectorsoft - which is pricey - supports Mac and its default hotkeys is to press ctrl-alt-shift-S simultaneously to bring the keylogger out of hiding.

Another hardware keylogger hotkey combo is   K B S   simultaneously.

Just google keywords "Macintosh keylogger Default Hotkey" and see what the research bears.

System Restore will display what programs were installed by clicking on a given day - oh crap - it's a Mac, sorry.

Hope it helps.

Re: Mac remote password, activity monitor

Though they're not too common, they do exist.

Take a look at this thread, particularly my mention of using the ctrl-alt options.

You could also create a "guest" account with limited privileges - such as the ability to forbid downloads or installing software.
