<Mod edit>: Kent was made famous in 2006 for his rant about hating his iMac after he was talked into purchasing one by a certain web-site owner friend of his who shall remain nameless. He posted some comments on Scott Moschella's Plastic Bugs blog and was talked about at length by Leo Laporte on his nationally syndicated radio show. We also posted his rant and updates, HERE at TheGuG.
Dear GrownUpGeek.com,
It has been a very long time since I’ve written to you concerning my relationship with my iMac and the time has come to reveal my true feelings about Mac and me. I really must thank GrownUpGeek.com (hubby) for encouraging me to continue on in the world of Apple as what I’m about to say can only be said because of the help I’ve received from Grown Up Geek and the members herein.
To get right to the point…I’m in love. I love Mac, iMac is the only (and better way) to go. I don’t quite go home and caress the thing, but I might as well. This thing has changed my life and the way I approach my craft(s), so much so, that I really can’t call it a ‘thing’. It’s a tool. It’s an extension of me and an extension of my creativity. I didn’t know that I was such a good photographer and musician – in my eyes anyway.
Some time ago, I purchased a digital camera - nothing fancy – some little ‘point and shoot’. I downloaded the pictures into iPhoto, played a bit with the editing tools. A little more color here, less light there, some airbrush around the eyes and instantly, I’m a professional photographer. My photos come out so well that people beg me to take their picture. Sometimes I tell them that I’m out of film. Some of my landscape and seascape shots are hanging on walls in other people’s houses. Do keep in mind, my fair Geeks that I’ve never taken photography classes of any kind nor purchased additional software since the day I bought my Mac. This is how well-thought-out Apple has made their product, oh, I mean – tool.
My friend, D. McKay asks, “How did you get my wife to look like that?”
Let’s quickly move on to music. Garage Band lies quietly on the desktop but is able to rock your world. Allow me to say up front, “I love Steve Jobs”. Two weeks ago, yes, I said only two weeks ago, I decided to check out Garage Band by the advice of Mario who is quite the artist himself. I really didn’t think he quite knew what he was talking about, I mean, what the heck can a little program named ‘Garage Band’ do for me and the music that fills my head? You see, I’m always tapping on tables, adding music lines to songs on the radio and I’m overwhelmed by the amount of music that is inside of me, trying to find a way out.
So I go home, sit at my iMac, take a deep breathe and click on the Garage Band icon. I didn’t know where to start so I shut it down then Googled Garage Band and found a PDF instruction manual. I returned to my iMac tool, the extension of my creativity, and began to make music which I have not done in a number of years. This is my first time out of the gate, no prior knowledge or experience with Garage Band and no formal training in orchestration, arranging, mixing or programming. I just have an ear for music, at least that’s what I call it, and Garage Band is the best assistant that I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with – or is it the other way around? Please feel free to listen to my very first song from Garage Band. It took me about 10 hours or so over the past 2 weeks to create. It was fun, easy and enlightening.
Like I now say, “I don’t know about you but I Mac.”
Thank you Hubby for opening up the world of Apple.
-Kent-
