Linux on imac

Linux on imac

Hello everyone!
I like imac very much and decided to buy one. But i need to use linux too, specially RedHat linux. Is it possible to dual boot on a apple machine? I mean i wanna use both linux and mac os on a single machine(imac). Is it possible? If the answer is positive, then how to do so? Please explain.
Thanks in advance,appreciately.

Hi Letun.

I have a question. Are you attempting to share files between the two operating systems?

That would be a little more complex. However, from what I'm reading, Red Hat can safely resize your Mac OS X partition, without deleting it. You'll just load the Red hat install CD and go.

The Linux distro (distribution) should find your Mac partition and present options to either delete, resize, overwrite, etc. (I've never installed Red Hat - so I'm unable to give the correct terminology). You'll want to resize. Give some thought as to how much time you'll actually use Red Hat and vice versa, then resize your hard drive accordingly (half and half?)

The install CD will also give you the option to install the LILO boot loader, which you'll want. That's the utility that will give you the option of which operating system you'll want to load at start-up.

Being that it's a new computer, as long as you have your Mac recovery disk and whatever personal data backed up - you should have no problem exploring the wonderful world of dual partitions. If you mess up the first time, just start over.

That's how I learned. It took me no less than five times to correctly configure my dual boot partitions - Windows Vista Business with Debian Etch - mainly due to Windows issues and flip-flopping on the correct size of partitions.

I'm not saying it's easy, but it's a heck of a learning experience.

Have a look at this article which should at least get you going in the right direction:

The latest rage - though it still has some problems - is "parallel operating systems" using VMware.

Most of the Macs I deal with have either Virtual Windows OS or Debian OS on a virtual machine.

You may want to Google "VMware" and see what comes up.

Or I'll just do it for you;-)
