So as it goes I have no hair. My 6 year old however has a mess of curly thick hair. My sister said I need leave in conditioner to make her hair easier to comb. She has a hard time rinsing out regular conditioner completely. The question is, do I still have her use regular conditioner that she rinses out and then use the leave in? Or just leave in? I asked a couple females but got no answers. I'm helpless here. I haven't had hair longer than 1/4 inch in almost 18 years. (If you don't count facial hair.) Thanks in advance.

Re: Ok girls (and maybe some guys) Leave in conditioner ...

I used to have really long hair and just using conditioner didn't help neither did leave-in. I found that putting conditioner in while in the shower then combing my hair out with the cconditioner in really helped a lot. And it's something she can do herself....

I have curly, thick hair and I use both. Curly hair, especially thick curly hair has a tendency to get very dry, so the more moisture the better. Rinsing with the coolest water she can take will be the best thing! I co-sign infusium 23.

i dont know what your budget is; but this is the ultimate hair care product - it's a cleansing conditioner called when. it comes with a money-back guarantee. because it's a shampoo and conditioner in one...you end up using less product. you also end-up not needing to use any other kind of extra/deep/after conditioners or detanglers. so, because of this, you do not spend as much money on a ton of other products that end up not working. it's foamless. it's amazing on hair and you will notice it after just one use!

Ok you don't have to use the rinse out conditioner with the leave in unless her hair is really stubborn. I reccomend the johnson and johnson detangler spray for after the bath we use it on my nieces and its great.

Searching down Bridles and Bows

My mom ask me to try to find Bridles and Bows hair products last known address Laguna Hills, Ca. I drove by the address and it is now an alternative energy company. Does anybody know if they are still out there? She would really love to go back to their products.

Bridles and Bows

About 10 years ago I tried getting my hands on one of the Bridles and Bows products because it was the only thing that i used in my hair. All the places that had previously sold it were no longer carrying it. I ended up driving to the distributor located in Irwindale CA (on Arrow Highway) and buying a case from them. That case lasted about 6 years and when it ran out, I didn't bother searching again.

If you still have any of their product, look to see who the distributor is and maybe you can go directly there like I did.

I've used the leave in conditioner for a few days now and I'm pretty happy with it so far. I might give the regular conditioner a shot tonight to see how that goes. Baby steps. Thanks everyone.

So you've gotten 3 billion replies, & sorry if i'm repeating someone...I'm sure whatever you're doing now is helping tremendously with all the helpful input you've received...But if you're still having difficulty, a good option may be taking her to a local salon or something...I work at one and the newer stylists services are half price...so that means a kid's cut would be around $8, $10 bucks...If her ends are in need of a cut it's making the tangles worse, (don't worry it doesn't mean she needs to get more than a trim lol) and alot of places offer kids products- tear free, tangle free, and they make bubbles too - for a relatively inexpensive price (paul mitchell would be my pick its no more expensive than store stuff usually, & it works wonders), plus most salons guarantee their products 100% so if it doesn't work for whatever reason you can get your money back...& don't worry about coming it out and stuff before, let 'em see it at it's worst, so they can make an accurate recommendation, it could even be the type of brush you're using that's causing some of the trouble.

Re: Ok girls (and maybe some guys) Leave in conditioner question

Well, I didn't read through all the responses either, but as a chick with long hair, I have my share of suggestions.

One, looks like most suggest not to go with anything fancy. Suave, Tresemme, Infusium, Garnier (she'll love the smell of that) will all give decent results.

Also, anything that says it has any amount of protein in it will eventually dry out her hair. If she's not going to "rotate" products (using different brands), don't use anything that calls itself a protein formula. Protein is good for maybe weekly treatments on adult, color treated hair. But for a kid and used each shampoo, it will eventually dry it out and make it unruly. Protein is to be used sparingly. I used a Fekkai protein leave in for a while, loved it but it "stopped working" after a couple weeks and my hair seemed fried. My stylist filled me in on the protein issue. Of course, you're not going spend $ on Fekkai for a kid.

To answer the issue of rinse out or leave in conditioner, BOTH. Think of the rinse out as long term, leave in as short term. Rinse out will smooth it gradually over time. Leave in will make it combable when wet (and never brush wet hair - good way to break it - comb only when wet which is why you can't condition a kids long hair too much).

And since we're talking a kid here, we're not worried about styling per se, are we? I mean, she doesn't need it to hold a style done with rollers. So in my opinion, you can't over condition it - the smoother it stays the better.

I also firmly believe in rotating products. Using a couple different lines prevents buildup. I'd also avoid anything volumizing for a kid since that will just leave buildup too.

My two cents, for what it's worth.

Re: Ok girls (and maybe some guys) Leave in conditioner question

Thanks for all the input. I'm gonna go with shampoo and leave in conditioner only. She's six and I want her to be able to do as much for herself as possible. I even have her comb her own hair on weekends. I still have to finish it but it's a start. Tonight will be first try. One thing I also do is at night I braid her hair. In the morning I take it down and it combs right through with little effort. Hopefully the leave in conditioner will  help with some of my combing problems after showers. Thanks everyone.

Braiding should help a lot with the tangles, I do it all the time.  My hair is long, pin straight, baby fine, and brittle.  I sleep with 2 braided pigtails, and I don't wake up with broken hair and snarls.  Just be careful of the holders you use.  My BF has to get the ones WITHOUT the little metal clasps.  They eat his curls, I swear!

Re: Ok girls (and maybe some guys) Leave in conditioner question

Okay, I didnt read all the answers...so this might be a repeat.

My former stepdaughter had long fine hair.... at 5 years old her hair was almost 4 ft long....since it was my decision to have her hair long, her mother put me "in charge" of hair maintenance. Tangles were horrible.

So this is what worked for us. One, we used TREsemme' products only.

Two... Shampoo and rinse..... Then I would cover the top layer of hair with conditioner....then starting at the BOTTOM, comb through it,using a comb with teeth wide apart...do that until all hair is conditioned.....

Then Rinse in the same manner.....As the shower water ran down her hair, I would start combing at the bottom, working my way up until all conditioner is gone..... No TANGLES!!!!!!! and well rinsed....

All that being said.....My wife now, her hair resembles a Lions mane of red curls.....What TREsemme' she cant rinse out, she leaves in. No harm done. Her hair is pretty much flawless....

 GOOD LUCK!!                                             thehunter

Re: Ok girls (and maybe some guys) Leave in conditioner question

i have very curly, thick, dry hair so i know how hard it can be! i'd say use a regular conditioner (when i was younger i used good old finesse) and comb it while the conditioner is in her hair, rinse and let it air dry. in my experience if you comb out curly hair after that it just gets frizzy. at least mine does and it ain't so pretty!

Re: Ok girls (and maybe some guys) Leave in conditioner ...

You just described my hair, and my routine exactly, with only one exception. I don't rinse out the regular old conditioner. As long as I don't leave too much in my hair it doesn't turn out flat or dull. And as long as i leave enough, it's not a big ball of fuzz.

Other than that, I sometimes I add a little gel before I brush/comb it. Air dry, shake out the top a bit and then use the straightener on my bangs only. Some brands of gel and conditioner don't go together well, but I've been pretty happy with Aussie Moist shampoo & conditioner and L.A. Looks Wet Look (used sparingly).

I only use my powers for good - well, 95% of the time anyway

Re: Ok girls (and maybe some guys) Leave in conditioner question

My Opinion is to use regular conditioner on her hair. Be sure to rinse out completely (with cold water) as cool as she can handle. Leaving conditioner in hair will make it harder to comb. You might be wasting money on the deep conditioners. These only really work when the hair is open ...like after a coloring. So use any type of regular conditioner and rinse out completely. Then use a spray on hair detangler. Spray on towel dried hair. Aussie seems to work pretty good. Just find a good Spray on hair detangler and that will give you a nice and easy comb thru! Hope that helps!

Re: Ok girls (and maybe some guys) Leave in conditioner question

I would use Pantene Shampoo and Conditioner in your daugher's hair it's not too strong and it rinses out pretty well, leaving the hair nice and shiny...and also...USE INFUSIUM 23 FOR NORMAL HAIR....it's like a hair strengthener...it will help keep moisture in her hair as well...i swear by it!!! it's ok to use a leave in conditioner after a regular one but you absolutely must rinse out the first conditioner if the instructions say to do so....that can be damaging to your daughters hair...

Re: Ok girls (and maybe some guys) Leave in conditioner question

Since this is a little girl we are talking about I would say to use Suave Professionals Healthy Curls conditioner (you said she has curls) and rinse it just a couple of times so a bit of it stays in her hair.  Afterwards just scrunch her hair in the towel, don't tossle it as that makes it knot up.  Then use a detangling spray- they have kids Suave and Johnson and Johnson products that are specifically for tangles.  I also would use something like Bouncy Spray, made by ISO, which can be found at your local salon so her curls will be bouncy and shiny.  Oh...and try not to use a hairdryer and if you do use the defuser attachment.

So it sounds like I can do either both or just leave in. Hubby, do you mean "Mane and Tail" perhaps. When I was like 15 I had a mullet. (Don't judge me.) I used Mane and Tail cause my parents had horses. Man those were the good old days. I think I'll take the kid by the store tomorrow and look into the Dove leave in. I sure do like cheap. Thanks.

My daughter has extremely long, fine hair. I use regular conditioner, and then either a spray in or leave in.

So my vote is BOTH.

Re: Leave in conditioner question

I have very dry-curly hair too, so i feel i can answer.  For the last 10 years I have used a leave-in conditioner only.. or sometimes both - but until I started keeping my hair very short, i could not leave the house without the leave-in or i would get the 'poofy' look.. I used one of those thick "horse-hair" leave-in conditioners i think it was called "bridles and bows" ..

Re: Ok girls (and maybe some guys) Leave in conditioner question

I'm basing my answer on my boyfriend's hair.  Use both, if possible.  He has very curly, very dry hair, and it's next to impossible to brush or comb.  It just grows.  The only time he can comb it is when it's wet with conditioner.  After he towel dries his hair, he uses a leave in conditioner.  I can't get photobucket to open for me, or I'd send you a pic.  Dove makes very good leave in conditioners, and they aren't really expensive.

I have to agree with lady. My daughter has a head full of thick curly hair. That gets really dry. It's impossible sometimes to comb. So I just wash her hair and put conditioner in it and rinse. If I'm in a complete rush or just need to comb her hair. I have hair detangler. It works on wet and dry hair. It's only a dollar usually at dollar general or family dollar. Don't know if you got them stores out by you. Make sure to comb her hair right when it's wet that's the easiet.
