Laptops and Sewing Machines Do Not Mix

Laptops and Sewing Machines Do Not Mix

I've spent all day trying to figure out why my laptop died on me two times.

Realized that when I set my laptop beside my sewing machine that something from the sewing machine made my laptop just die. Black screen dead.

I don't know the technical reasons, except that something in my sewing machine was killing my computer immediately.

Lesson learned. Keep away from the sewing machine.

wow, I never thought that sewing machines had that strong of motors. Did the laptop die with the sewing machine on or off?

just an interesting article

Re: Laptops and Sewing Machines Do Not Mix

Sewing machine is off and was off, but plugged in. Where my electric plugs into my laptop.... this part of the laptop was sitting just next to the sewing machine where it's electrical plugin and motor is.

I have a feeling that I have some lasting problems though, computer died on me again this morning and it's not next to sewing machine.

It is overheating, so I have propped it up from underneath and that helps. I had to take out the battery, put it back in and it works fine. I think I have actually messed up my laptop and time probably is not on my side.

Later today when I get home I am backing everything up. Mostly pictures I'm concerned about.

If it died again, then it's probably not EMI (electromagnetic interference.) EMI causes mysterious, intermittent errors such as crosstalk. Now it's overheating...maybe you can check for dust and/or check the fan. Most pc's and laptops will shut themselves down to prevent major damage from overheating. Maybe you can try some compressed air to the vents. Hope it helps, and good thinking about backing up your data.
Re: Laptops and Sewing Machines Do Not Mix

Seems there is a new twist to the story of my laptop problems and that twist is called Son.

I noticed that when I unplugged my mouse from the USB port and plugged in my flashdrive, then plugged my printer into the USB port that is underneath the USB port I use for the flash drive and my mouse, it died. It just shut off!

So, I sit here with my laptop propped up to allow sufficient airflow underneath and if I want to unplug anything from the USB ports, I must first turn OFF my laptop, make the changes and turn it back on again.

That Sucks! And that's what I said outloud to my husband and my son heard me say that and he came in and said, yeah mom, I tried using your laptop and had a problem getting my flashdrive in.

Oh great. There is no reason to have a problem with putting a flashdrive in. I believe in his usual hurried up I'm gonna make it fit even if I'm putting it in wrong has not helped. Ugh. I tried to keep this computer away from anyone but me.

I feel I'm still on borrowed time here and I don't want to take apart my laptop, which my son has already done.

I really should have it looked at but I'm dragging my feet and refusing to do it still. I'll be sorry for this I know. Maybe next week. And clean it out from dust, etc.

My son told me $700.00 for a laptop is a pretty cheap laptop and I should have spent more $$'s on one. ha ha . He's right, but I'm a cheapskate.

We have compressed air, so I'll do that for now.

Hi Lynn,

So sorry to hear that your laptop is still sketchy. The thing that keeps kids away from your laptop is to have one account with a password. Don't give anyone the password. Works for mine. If you feel generous, make a limited "Other Users" account with HEAVY parental controls for the internet and very few programs - maybe MS Office apps only... for school use. Laughing

As for the USB port, if there is no physical damage to the port itself, it could be that the USB drivers somehow became hashed and need to be reinstalled. Let me know if you need steps for this process.

When it comes to spending $$ on computers; figure out what you tasks you'll use the machine for (internet surfing, AutoCAD, video production, gaming), and spend accordingly. What's the point in spending $2K on a laptop to play Mahjong?

Darn - simply moving away the electromagnetism was a much easier fix! How 'bout a chiller? I've considered one for my lappie, however, chillers use a large quantity of power. It's strange, but when one of our computers at home is ailing, it's almost like having a family member who is ill. Either way, Lynn, back it all up while you can.... and get well soon. ~A. Re: Laptops and Sewing Machines Do Not Mix
Lynn, have you ever moved a magnet close to a computer monitor? A smallish rainbow of colors appears showing the magnetic fields. Not quite sure about the science here, but I can imagine that a lasting exposure to the magnetic field created by the motor in the sewing machine might create permanent disruption in the pixels of a monitor and a circuit board. *phew*, spoken like a true geek! Great advice & thanks for sharing it! No doubt that this lesson was learned at significant cost. Like Stevie, I'm curious to know if your laptop has recovered. ~A. We are what we repeatedly do. Re: Laptops and Sewing Machines Do Not Mix

OH yes, it has recovered! This was probably one of my worst days cause I couldn't be here! I was miserable and was actually trying to piece together another computer and got it all set up, but couldn't find my Linksys little antenna thingy to plug into the back of my newly put together computer so I could be wireless. I hate dial-up!

I have seen the rainbow on our tv when hubby insisted on putting 3 little speakers right above it on the wall....all the time I am saying No, you can't do that! That's what made me feel stupid for not thinking of this same problem right away.

I felt it was important to post my problem so that no one else does the same stupid move I did.

I'm so glad my laptop is okay. I had moved it right away both times it happened, which turns out to be a good thing.

I never woulda thunk it. A lesson learned. Funny story, though.
