I am: Legendary

Since we have all shared our view on birth control and contraceptives for teens, and Sex Ed in our schools,  I would love to get your feedback on the movie Juno, which was just released on DVD this past Tuesday. Mini me's BFF saw it at the movies with her newly divorced mom. She is twelve. Mini me is ten. I am going to rent it Friday (no school) and watch it with her so when she does launch her twenty-questions about the film and its content, I will be there to answer. Not friends. Not kids at school. Or Girl Scouts at meetings or camp. Not Mrs. B. at school. Me....Mom. The one with all of the answers!

Has anyone else seen it? Taken your tween, teen, or kids?

I also have rented movies this past year that are not exactly Disney! Such as "Mean Girls," and "Sleep Over," she loves the High School Musical movies, and "Clueless." I rented them to watch with her and her BFF, her parental support, because of the way girls treat other girls these days. Mini me is not a typical blonde/blue. She is beyond intelligent. So she is not average and therefore, I know she will be in for a firestorm once she gets in junior high and high school. So, being the mama bear protecting her cub so fiercely, I felt it necessary let her watch, in a movie format, how others girls can be and why. I am very content with my decision to do such. She can clearly distinguish now between girls who want to be her friend, a true friend, and those who want to be her friend because they see benefit$.

So, share with me your view points on Juno if you have seen it, or are intending to do so. And what you think about preparing daughters for their tween and teen years.

Re: Just Released: Juno (p to the izzle)

I liked it, honest to blog. Ok, so I did really like it but some of the dialog was over the top silly. I couldn't figure out if Juno's parents were trying to be the cool parents or if was just poorly written parts. Overall it's a good movie and could be a good way to transition into dialog about teen pregnancy. My fear would be that by the time my daughter was old enough to see a movie with that language in it she would too old to talk to about sex. I plan on hitting it hard in the next year or so. I want to get her before she starts her period.

I liked Bleeker but I always like that kid in movies. There were several scenes in the movie that were written very well that made up for the sometimes silly dialog. Like when Juno is talking about the track team running and they show the close up on their crotches. That was funny.

We burned Juno so I will definitely watch it again. My wife thoroughly enjoyed it. She saw it at the movies and again with me at home.

indeed! thanks for the follow up. i heard mini me arranging a sleepover for the weekend and during her plotting, she told her friend, "....and i have the movie juno which is really good, but i will need a permission slip from your parents to watch it at my house so my mom doesn't get in trouble!"  -  - next she'll be selling $2 tickets at my front door to all of the neighbor kids with permission slips!

Re: Just Released: Juno

My husband wanted to see this movie more than I did.  He could identify with the main characters more than I could because of personal experience.  His son was born when he was 18.

I personally liked the movie. I thought it was well written as an entertainment piece. If anyone was expecting more of a "real life" exploration of teen pregnancy you won't find it here. Juno has a really easy, uncomplicated pregnancy.

What I really did like was the way the story handled marriages and the relationship Juno had with the adults in her life.  There's two dynamics of interest here: Juno's dad's second marriage and the marriage of the Lorings, the prospective adoptive parents. You just got the idea that these adult characters were real.  I'm friends with a guy like Juno's dad and I  know a couple like Vanessa and Mark Loring.

Allison Janney's portrayal as Juno's stepmother is pretty spot-on.  She's her no-bullshit protector in some parts of the movie.  At the end, it's Allison holding Juno's hand during the delivery.

 Just my thoughts.

Re: Just Released: Juno

I finally got to see the movie. I loved it Laughing My friend mentioned that she felt it was more for entertainment purposes than anything, and I agree. It was cute, and I can only hope that when girls go to see it, they'll have someone there explaining (like smartmom did with her daughter) because Juno was so together with the whole situation that I would hate to hear that young girls think it would be the same way if that happened.

The music also rocked Smile

Re: Just Released: Juno

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Juno plan on giving it up for adoption? Maybe that's why she didn't seem so "connected" to the pregnancy. I Loved this movie. I loved her subtle humor outlook on everything. She didn't stress herself out over the whole thing, she's young and in school and handled everything the best way she could. No, being pregnant at 16 isn't something we should all applaud but it happens, we cant just look the other way and pray our kids don't notice. I feel communication is everything, I have a son and Thank God everyday for it because Lord knows the hell I gave my parents but one thing I do know is that communication is everything. I think this is a great mother-daughter movie to watch especially if your prepared for the questions. Its a great base for a great conversation. Go Juno!

Re: Just Released: Juno

I loved this movie, but I felt it was unrealistic in the sense of how disconnected from her pregancy Juno was... I think more girls would have trouble over the issue... Juno on the other hand knew she had no interest in being a mommy... I know there are probably some that would be like that, but nowadays teens seem too afraid to tell their parents and the ones that know they don't wanna be a mother end up being the ones that throw the baby in the trash or something equally as awful...

So, on the one hand that it seems a bit unrealistic, I liked the fact that it isn't something she hides, she deals with the consequences, tells her parents, goes through the right steps (doctors appointments, etc...) and tries to take care of what she needs to take care of...

And my favorite scene is the opening convenience store scene... great foundation, and hilarious...

So yeah, it does seem to make light of the situation, but it's a good movie... read: movie... not documentary, biography, or anything else... so of course it's gonna be a bit unrealistic.

Re: Just Released: Juno

I just saw this movie a couple days ago. The movie was ok, I'm kinda neutral on it. I don't agree with the whole concept though.  A lot of young girls have/will watch it.  There are the responsible parents, like tuna, that will educate their kids on the subject. But there are many more parents that will not talk to their daughters. In my opinion this movie is telling girls it's ok to be preggers at 16. Especially with the main characters lax attitude about it. Sorry but I don't think it's ok to be pregnant at 16. This movie, combined with the spears girl, is just a sad reality of the current times.

I agree that it represents reality of what is going on now. Hopefully parents will think to talk to their kids about what is going on in the movie and what happens after. Since I didn't see the movie, I can't say that Juno's attitude was lax or everyone wasn't worried about it, but I like that it brings up something that's actually happening now. For me, it's more of a reality because there are (unfortunately) many teens where I live that become pregnant, possibly because parents refuse to acknowledge that teen sex is happening. I wish people would start educating before it's too late.

It's all controversial, I guess. It's just like putting condom dispensers in school--would that show that the school was promoting teen sex, or are they aware of the problem and taking measures to protect their students?

Re: Just Released: Juno

I DIDNT  LIKE THE MOVIE I THOUGHT IT WAS NOT A GOOD MESG TO SEND OUT .... SHOWING ITS NOT SUCH A BIG DEAL TO BE A PREGO TEEN... ITS CUTE YES, I TOOK MY COUSIN THATS 13 (WENT WITH  HER MOM) AND SHE FELT UNCOMFORTABLE IN A FEW SCENES AND DIDNT QUITE GET... I THINK THERE ARE BETTER WAYS TO PREPARE YOUR TEENS IF MY DAUGHTER WERE A TEEN TODAY I WOULDNT LET HER SEE IT.

omg i totally disagree! I dont think this movie at all endorses teen pregnancy. It shows how hard it is, and the tough choices a girl will have to make. I do think parents need to watch it with their kids to make sure it DOESNT get misinterpreted though.

Re: Just Released: Juno

My daughter saw this movie in the movies 3 times.  They liked it.  Once they even sat through the whole thing without 40 runs to the lobby for various things i.e. drinks, candy, bathroom, quick mirror run,  THAT in itself is big thumbs-up for those girls.  I often wonder why I pay for her to go to the movies so she can text me 20 times about sleeping over "whoevers" house.......lol

She also liked all those other movies you mentioned.  Mean Girls.......*shakes head*...... that would be when she asked me what "slut" and "fugly" meant.  We still like those movies but it also brought up the type of girl NOT to be.

Re: Just Released: Juno

Hey, I watched it before it was released. She at first was going to abort, then ran like the wind from the clinic.......she puts the baby up for adoption.....and her and her "lover" have a very strange relationship. I would say it's an ok movie, but it definitely didn't live up to all the critic talk.

I'd say it would raise questions, though......although through the whole movie, she acts really unconcerned about what she's doing, in my opinion.

Re: Just Released: Juno

I agree.

It's definitely not that GREAT and didn't live up to all the reviews!  "Juno" took her pregnancy way too lightly and never really connected with the pregnancy.

I didn't like her attitude in the movie at  all.

I probably wouldn't watch it again, but that's just my opinion.
