ok, this is a problem i have never had before,
lately, for the past month, my internet signal has been saying low, and my speed sticks to around 20mbps
wen it is usually at least 60mbps,
now, i know the modem/router has not been moved, my computer hasnt been moved, so i know its not that, is there anything i can do to make my signal and mbps come back to the way i like it ?
internet signal and mpbs always low
You can eliminate one possible glitch by releasing and renewing your IP address. This is no big deal. Using WinXP: Start>Run, type cmd, hit OK. This brings up your command prompt. Type what's in bold: ipconfig /release (that's a space after the g), hit enter. Then type in ipconfig /renew and hit enter. Worth a try anyway.
If you've done your bitchware scans with Adaware and Spybot S&D, the problem is probably traffic issues on your ISP's end. Call them up and if you get to talk to a customer rep named Hadji, tell him that Steve said he was sorry he was rude last time.
If your speed is suddenly slow, then most definitely there is some wireless interference. Before many wireless technologies and electronics came out, the 2.4 ghz band (which is what 99% of wireless electronics run on including your home phone, wireless mouse / keyboard, router signals etc...) was always empty. Now it is flooded with many electronics, mentioned above that cause interference. It may be a new wireless device you got or a neighbors device. Unfortunately, there is no fix to it unless you can somehow move the router closer to your laptop or point the direction using a parabola type router device towards your computer. Also try changing different channels in your router setup, it may help, at least it did with mine. You can use a program called http://www.netstumbler.com/ to detect all WiFi signals from your area and what channel they are on and try to move to an empty channel.

I'm having same issues. Big ones today where it went from 54 down to 1. Yes, 1. It's never gone down to 1. Checking available networks, I noticed a 'Clyde' disappear and reappear when I went back down to 1. I wondered if they were trying to connect to my Secured Network. I did the repair. Unplugged the modem as I always do. Ended up going to actiontec and changed my name of my modem and since then, no problems. ?
Other thing I wanted to run past everyone, was that I 'heard' that neighborhoods could experience lower Mbps when everyone is on. Example: I have Actiontec through Qwest. So do all the neighbors.
When the neighbors are at work, I have no troubles. When they get home, it's all downhill.
Does that scenario make sense or is it just all nonsense.
If I was standing on a fish, I'd slip and fall......
actually smartmom is right, i have other people using the same modem, and its not mine, its my uncles, but they dont do internet games they jus surf, and it seems like its only this comp, my other comp is jus fine, but its my school laptop,

try to reset evrything reformat your pc configure new settings then install deepfreeze on the drive where your os is also installed so everytime you'll open your system d settings goes back on the way you like it is on the first place
*and also a hardrive for all your if you don't want to go back in stone age
Also I don't know if you share your signal with any other computers in the house but if they are doing online games (like WOW or Final Fantasy) that will suck up your bandwidth. My oldest is into online games and I can tell you the min he turns on his pc and logs into his games - it doesn't make for a happy house.

There is a new set of Malware and Spyware making there way around the Internet so if you havent run your anti0virus and Spyware killer in a while do it.
Resident Programs like Weatherbug,MSN MEssanger and other instant mesaging and things like the HP Center will eat up bandwith keeping you connected and looking for updates, if you aren't using them then they don't need to be in memory on "standby
P2P servers can eat your Bandwith with their spyware and Malware montirtoring and recording your every move as well as people downloading stuff from you.
I think the one I found on 1 computer having "Modem trouble" had a PSP hiding in a second drive in a locked directory (password only) and there was 120 downlaods being pulled off the computer including music and Movie files. (Computer was bought for $200 from a college Geek)
Took 4 hours to hack through the P2P files, destroy the 4 viruses and 30ish malwares associated with it and to remove all but the main locked folder (without actually seeing them via the command line). was like 4000 Mp3s and 20 bootlegged movies on the thing I had to erase so there was nothing "to share" though Bandwith shot up almost instantly when I delt the first "crippling blow" to that P2P...forget the name off hand but College kids use it a lot though it by itself is a "infected" program like Kazza and Imesh used to be
Major P.S.
Certain Spyware and Antivirus programs themselves are sell outs like Norton Antivirus and MCfee which allow "Autorized advtisers" to run their spybots and Malware unmollested and if you are Running Mcfee or NOrton it could be one of their "friends" killing your bandwith
If you are running Norton or Mcfee then I suggest you get advast Antivirus, which is absolutely free and can do automatic daily updates and Spybot Search and Destroy (install advast first then uninstall norton/MCfee before rebboting so you are covered, then install and run Spybot S&D)
You can try unplugging the modem and router cable and power spply, counting to 30, then replugging them then try to repair the connection in the "My Network places" under the "Show network places" option
People also tend to forget that their connection is physical and subjected to weather and such so they should periodically check their cable and junction boxes for wear and tear or corrosion (or have the cable/telephone company do it)
For instance the spliter on my cable was wet with rain water after a storm and was corrored and wasn't capable of handing as much power as the Cable company was going to be needing for their new, at the time "Road Runner Service" so they had to change out all the splitters with 1gighertz models.
Also, If you have RoadRunner Service, they are upgrading all over the U.S. for their Digital Cable and DIgital Phone Service and the Old MOdems need to be replaced with the new ones.
So if you have Road Runner, and your modem been acting funny only recently, then call to see if they did a "ROad RUnner Upgrade" cause I was totally uninformed and had no "Road Runner Service" for a few days cause they forgot to tell me that my MOdem was about to become incompatible with the new digital service (or maybe they did but I didn't hear cause I am not the one that watches T.V. all day and I never read the Newsletter....lol)
